Description
I am the whisper through the woods, that rattles the trees, and makes the creek sing. The rocks whistle with my passing, the leaves shiver, and the doe blinks, wide-eyed for the click of the hunter's gun. I bring the first biting chill or autumn, the gentle kiss of spring. I carry the mighty howl of winter, the sweet chime of summer. I have been here since the beginning, I will be here till the end.My song has changed, however, with the coming - the passing - of man. They have left me laden with smog, flecks of smoke, and now I know the bellow of machines. I am tainted and forlorn, wrapped no longer in my mother's silks, but trapped in the wrought iron of human invention. Your progress is my demise.
So I set forth, my children into the night's willing arms, up towards the sky and far away. I thought you could not reach them there.
I was wrong.
But now, even here, awash with the foulness of tomorrow, I can still hear the lilting tune of my fair home. So I spring forth, in all my glory, to be known once more. I lash the sailor and the hull of his vessel, I tear down the homes of my tormentors, and rise forth with a great eye that is stillness before the storm. For that is what I am, a part of, as much as it is me.
Who are you to think you can tame me? You, who cannot even touch me. See me. You can only hear me, so listen well, little creature of flesh, and hearken to my roar -
"I am the wind. I am the wolf. -
I am free."
