Description
The third blue ringed octopus! Commission.Needle felted wool over pipe cleaner so it can be posed. I dyed the wool myself.
I think this is the best octopus yet. I really focused on proportion and detail this time around. The rings are more delicate and deliberately placed, I added the bumpy texture around the eyes and along the mantel, the head to arm ratio is more pleasing, and ... well, I just fell in love with this one. It was very hard to let it go when it was finished.
My last Etsy order for a while too.

I love this little guy, he's gorgious! All those little rings pop out, but it somehow still feels like a nice, soft colour transition.

This is absolutely amazing, like all of your other work!
I had a question- coming from a beginner in felting- how is it that you get your finished product so neat, if you will? There are few loose strands of wool. I can never seem to keep mine all that neat. Do you trim the finished product, or do you just work it all in with the needle?

FamiliarOddlings In reply to Nightowl143 [2012-04-30 20:41:00 +0000 UTC]
Thank you!
I know what you mean. In the beginning, I used to trim them before photographing. Now, I hardly ever do unless the piece is quite small and the loose strands are more noticeable in the photos. I found that even after a trim, they usually fuzz up over a short time anyway. I've decide my felted creations are just gonna be fuzzy, but that's not at all a bad thing. ^_^ The white paper background for the photos helps keep the strands from being too noticeable. Some wool/roving is different too; some are easier to "smooth" and you can get it to look very neat, but others you could poke for eternity and it would never get as clean.
My advice is to try not to go too crazy over it, since it can take an inordinate amount of time to poke it into "neatness" that other people don't even notice. Plus, I try not to felt too densely -- I personally like the squishy give of mediumly felted creations. But some felters make that into their style; very dense and very neat. It can be totally awesome, but it's not what I try to do.
The blue rings are tightly felted and kind of dense just to make sure the colors stay where they're supposed to. But I really strive to keep it flexible, since I want to be able to pose the tentacles without strange wrinkles springing up.
I hope that answers your question! Thanks again for the comment and good luck to you on your felting adventures!
