Description UPDATE: If you don't have Adobe Illustrator, you can download another vector software for FREE. It's called
Inkscape . I havn't downloaded it yet so I don't know how to use it. But you can still use it for removing the white background on the SVG file.

NOTE: Once in Photoshop you can edit the canvas size to fit the new image. Also, you are not limited to using Chrome or Safari, these are simply the browser I use the most.

Bitmaps use pixels to display an image. Vectors use polygons and shapes to display an image.
Because of this, you can scale a vector to ANY size and it will not lose ANY quality, unlike a bitmap. There some drawbacks though.
For instance, because vectors use only polygons and shapes, you can't make any kind of gradients or fades (because polygons and shapes are solid, they can't fade).
The only way to make a gradient on a vector, is AFTER you turn it into a vector, scale it to the size you want, and turn it back to a bit map. That's why it's best to use an image with solid shapes, like a logo, when converting a bitmap to a vector.

Oh and to clarify, when MAKING a vector it is possible to make fades. But when converting one, it isn't. This is because converting bitmap to vector uses tracing, last time I checked, you can't trace a fade.
