There is a name spoken by Vikings to this day, one that brings both terror and excitment to all who hear it. The mere mentioning of it is enough to send everyone in the vicinity to the ground, and put the bravest warriors to flight. The Night Fury, the rarest and most elusive of the Archetype dragons, never shows itself, never steals food... and never misses. It was once known as "the unholy offspring of lightning and death itself." Maybe that was because it revealed its glory and power to even less than a handful of land-lubbers in the last 300 years. It was only a few short weeks before the Second Great Era, after eight generations shrouded in mystery, when the truth behind the most feared dragon of all was finally uncovered.

To date, no Night Fury has ever been bought down in battle. Domestications are also rare, and require extensive care and partnership between pet and owner. In the first known case, about a month before the Battle of the Green Death, during a typical raid on the coastal town of Berk, an adolescent male Night Fury was recorded among the dragon specimens present. It was presumed dead after it was shot down by the author's Mangler, but it was later recovered after it crashed just off Raven Point; the dragon, dubbed as Toothless, was unable to fly due to one of its tail fins being severed, which may explain why it took to being domesticated more easily than other dragons would have, since only a rider, namely the author, would have been able to control its prosthetic tail fin. No other Night Fury has been known to be domesticated in this way.
The taxonomy of the Night Fury was the subject of much debate throughout the First Era, especially since no-one had ever seen, much less killed, one of these dragons. However, a study on the aforementioned specimen places it firmly in the Neodraconid class. The dragon has four functional legs as well as wings, and it lacks the nodule behind its shoulders that would have indicated a Wyvernids' characteristic wishbone. It has four claws on each foot, which cements it deeper still in the Neodraconid family. It also has a flexible spine, a large head, and short legs for streamlining. Overall, the Night Fury's anatomy places it in the same group as the Terrible Terror , the Skulldren , and the Sharkworm (Saurodraconidae), although it is a bit higher on the evolutionary scale than any of them.

The Night Fury is gifted with the largest known wingpan of any dragon compared to body size, capable of stretching its wings at least twice its own body length (Fig. A). Its wings are also broad, giving it a large surface area to increase lift; it also has the largest proportional wing surface area of any dragon species. Night Furies can therefore fly faster, higher, and farther than any dragon, with a minimum expenditure of energy. Notably, the Night Fury also has additional flight membranes on its hips and at the end of its tail (Fig. A), which aid in balance. The tail fin in particular can fold down so that it lies flat against the line of the tail, and aids the dragon in steering; if it is removed or damaged, the Night Fury will be unable to steer properly and therefore will be unable to fly.
Even if it is grounded, however, the Night Fury isn't entirely helpless, for it is a surprisingly fast runner and a powerful swimmer as well. Similar to the Terror and the Skulldren, the Night Fury's spine can flex both laterally and vertically. It can therefore curve its body, like the spring of a bow, so that its legs can pull close to each other, and then in effect shoot the dragon forward. The dragon's claws are partially retractable, like those of the Monstrous Nightmare , giving its feet extra grip as it races along. Its lack of horns also aids in streamlining in both air and water; in their place, it has fleshy, muscular extensions which function as external ears, allowing it to hear better than other dragons.

When a Night Fury is engaged in battle, it sets its goal upon ending it as soon as possible. These dragons are equipped with powerful physical weaponry. Although their claws do not retract completly they are still deadly sharp, but their curvature suggests that they are primarily used for clinging and gripping, and used to pin down the opponent while its teeth do their worst. Notably, said teeth are retractable (like those of constricting snakes), which may explain how the aforementioned Toothless recieved his iconic name. These are the dragon's main weapons in physical combat, capable of maintaining their sharp edges for long periods of time. Unlike in most dragons, which have one set of jawbones, the Night Fury has two: the outer set is attached to the inner, and provides the main attachment point for the jaw muscles, while the inner houses the teeth. In addition, the upper portion of the skull also contains a separate jawbone that contains the upper teeth - no other dragon has teeth attached in this manner. Like the teeth of the Sharkworm, the Night Fury's fangs are replacable, and it may shed hundreds throughout its lifetime; however, these teeth are more conventional in that they grow from the base of each jawbone, and take more time to be replaced, typically several weeks at the longest. Its gums have evolved to form a protective sheath that envelops the teeth when not in use, and folds back whenever the dragon needs them (Fig. B.b). Given the subpar replacement mechanism, this acts as double insurance that the Night Fury has enough teeth to win a battle.
The Night Fury is nocturnal, and is therefore adapted to fly and hunt in near-total darkness. While a normal dragon's flight skills would be hampered by the lack of light, the Fury can pilot itself with incredible agility, even under this condition, as demonstrated by its ability to dive-bomb its prey literally unseen. This dragon hunts by sight, so naturally its eyes have evolved to become large, to take in as much light as possible (Fig C). At such speeds as those encountered by a flying Night Fury, airborne particles can cause serious damage if it isn't too careful, so a nicticiating membrane (Fig C.a) protects the eye during its flight. To see at night, the eye itself contains a special membrane called the tapetum, similar to that of other large nocturnal predators, to reflect collected light for the sake of sharper vision. To control the amount of light that enters, the pupil can also contract into a vertical slit (Fig C.b) in conditions of intense light. Fury eyes have also evolved to convey various expressions, such as wide near-circles for excitement or contentment (Fig C.c) or thin slits for anger or shock (Fig C.d).
One of the most famous attacks a Night Fury can execute, of course, is its Dive-Bomb attack. Night Furies spit fire using a special mixture of nitrogen dioxide and potassium that instantly combusts upon exposure to air. The resulting lilac flame burns intensely, and if the heat from the intial explosion doesn't cause damage, the fumes that are left behind surely will. This fuel is stored in a bladder located in the chest, and loosed through a special tube connecting to the mouth; the muscular front end of the tube acts as a guide so that the Fury's flame hits with pinpoint accuracy (Fig B.a). A Night Fury's blast can hit a target the size of a coin from 90 meters away, even when diving at full speed.

Night Furies have kept their secrets for so long not only because they are nocturnal; these dragons never touch land, even when migrating, because they do not hunt over land, but over water. All of the adaptations described - flexible spine, lack of horns, large eyes, and extra steering membranes - are designed for a combination aerial and aquatic lifestyle. Although it is one of the most powerful of all dragons, the Fury isn't the largest or strongest, so to protect itself from predators but reduce water resistance, its skin is covered in overlapping fish-like scales that can withstand most conventional weaponry, as well as the flames, teeth, and claws of other dragons (although its joints are somewhat more vulnerable). In the water, a Fury folds its wings, fins, ears, and legs tight against its sides for streamlining, and uses its powerful tail as the main propulsion mechanism. In this way, it can move surprisingly fast in the water, despite its adaptations for flight, and can catch fish quickly and easily. Furies typically hunt near the surface or in the air, but when diving after prey or hiding from predators, they can hold their breath for up to half an hour, surviving on oxygen stored in their bloodstream.
This dragon can be considered a very picky eater, and feeds almost exclusively on aquatic life, preying on fish such as cod, salmon, and sea bass, although in a pinch it will also takes mammals, birds, seaweed or even terrestrial vegetation. Like most other dragons, however, it detests eels, since their elongated body shape brings great discomfort to both its crop and gizzard. When they are not hunting, Furies roost on cliffsides that are nigh inaccessible, even to other dragons, so that they can rest easy with the knowledge that they are safe from predators. The Fury's flight pattern takes the form of a circular spiral, similar to that of large predatory birds, catching rising air currents with its broad wings and other flight membranes to keep itself airborne. When it spots its target, it hovers in the air for a few seconds, and then dives. Often, the only warning that the dragon is coming is the ballistic scream of air rushing past its wings as it plummets at up to 250 mph. Its streamlined body shape reduces the stress of impact as it plunges headlong into the water, and at the last possible second, extends its teeth to grab the prey. Should it encounter a large meal, it uses its hook-like talons to hold onto it as it carries it off; its large wings usually provide enough lift to get this job done. A Night Fury can fly while grasping its own body weight in its talons or teeth, but it usually does not attack anything greater than half its body size lest it get dragged under.

Night Furies generally hunt in small groups, although solitary examples (such as Toothless) are not uncommon. Flocks consist of five to six individuals, which are organized more based off personal relationships than status or rank. There are no alpha members, but all individuals are expected to participate equally. A member may choose to leave the flock, and the other members will leave it to its own devices if it decides to do so, although they may still keep in contact with the lone individual on occasion. Fury flocks seem to value teamwork and the performance of the whole more than member placement and individual roles, and the belief that every dragon counts as a part of the greater good of the group.
This behavior is also evidenced by the dragon's intelligence - the Fury is one of the smartest of all dragon species, and it has to be due to the difficulties of social life. What they cannot express verbally, i.e. through their grunts, snarls, roars, and screeches, they usually indicate using body language and expressions. This is especially important for this sort of flock structure, since coordination takes particularly high importance. A lone Night Fury may be able to go its own way, but normally it would be less successful when hunting; a group of Furies working together would be able to catch more and harder prey items, but they will have to work hard at being social animals. Each lifestyle therefore has both its benefits and its prices, but the end results are usually worth it depending on each dragon's personality.
No better example of Night Fury teamwork can be cited than in clashes against orcas, the largest known aquatic predators and rivals to the Night Fury in terms of speed, intelligence, and power. Like Furies, these literal killer whales, actually the largest of the dolphin family and therefore just as intelligent, tend to congregate in groups, with little social hierarchy. Since these two species hunt on the same turf, the competition can be fierce, and the battles that result can only be described as legendary. Almost no records exist of them, almost because Toothless himself was involved in such a fight several months into the Second Era. A small band of three orca had somehow invaded the fishing grounds just off the coast of Berk, possibly due to being lost during a migration. They had discovered the bounty of fish available and were quick to take advantage of it, much to the dismay of the settlers there. Several dragons were deployed to scout the area, including Toothless himself, but what no-one expected was a flock of eight fully-grown Night Furies, all in flying wedge formation, on the attack as the orcas made their grand appearance. Just three of these whales were a good match against nine of the most powerful dragons, though, so Toothless joined in, showing great social skills and planning even for a solitary dragon. Although the orcas were a formidable offense, the tide of the battle turned when his famous Dive-Bomb struck the largest of them, an adult male, directly in the blowhole, hampering his ability to breathe and therefore his fighting strength. Using the wingman dragons to cut off any possibility of side-stepping, the whole flock emerged victorious as they drove the orcas back out to sea, where they returned to their migration route and made their getaway as fast as they could swim.

The Night Fury is, to say the least, the ultimate dragon, a powerful mix of intelligence, power, and lightning-quick movement. It is the rarest of the Archetype dragons, and due to its extreme value, it is the only one that is endangered due to poaching and habitat loss. Strict conservation status implies that only very few Night Furies are allowed as domesticates, and a special license is required to own one. Nevertheless, despite the extreme difficulties of having a Night Fury for a pet, the risks are outweighed by the benefits of having a formidable ally, a noble steed, and a friend for life.

-The Dragon Manual, Volume III: Mystery Class

Since I covered dragons not seen in the movie, I will cover the ones seen in the movie now, which I call the "Archetype Dragons." These are the most common dragons, and the basic starting choices for dragon training.

And here he is, the mack-daddy of all the Archetypes, the Night Fury. Please do not apply glitter paint, faux feathers or fur, frills, spikes, or anything else for that matter. Night Furies are NOT designer animals, people! They're meant to be loved just the way they are.
Despite my best efforts, I wasn't able to get the color right, alas, despite the use of the closest colored pencils I could find. I need to get prismacolors, since those seem to be more vivid and of better quality. I used the same rubbing approach for the scales as I did the Terror, although much more complex and directed. The sketch of its full wingspan is a colored version of the one that Hiccup made in the movie, which provides an accurate sense of the proportion of wingspan to body length.
On a side note, of all the Archetypes, this one racks up the highest stats, at a whopping 91/100! It's no wonder that people say, "NIGHT FURY! GET DOWN!!!"
Well, that's all the Archetype dragons, everyone! Thanks to all of you for watching, supporting, and piling in all the comments, faves, and llamas!

The Dragon Manual and How to Train Your Dragon are copyright to Dreamworks and Cressida Crowell. But the Night Fury concept art is mine.

But the Night Fury uses Plasma bolts, I heard Hiccup call it out so how could it be called a Dive Bomb. it is understandable that Night Furies would dive bomb while shooting out a plasma bolt(the look like plasma bolts too if you took the time to watch them.) but not call them dive bombs, otherwise this is an excellent Info page explaining the Night Fury

i can see that with the colors you could have just used the lighter blue shades to give off the light and then move on to darker colors in terms of shading. Then use the black to add shadow and give the Night fury that fully black look just bits now to determine light.

how is that for advice?

If not i can draw an example if you want.
