Part Three: Final Preparations/Over The Moon
--
Descry had not expected Tigerlily himself to arrive at Schist’s camp. He eagerly accepted Scion Skoll’s request to prepare for the worst. He knew it was also a way to keep the dread from taking over his mind. The idea of handing over Guile still boiled his blood. He wouldn’t consider doing that, though he acknowledged it would be the easiest way out of this.
Would he be prepared to draw blood… to kill? It was one thing for the concept to stay in one’s mind but to perform it?
His thoughts trailed off, claws ripping up the ground below. He had already accepted Skoll’s request to defend Memory along with other volunteers. It was going to happen.
Just then, Asp approached him. Descry had seen the sundrake many times in Memory but had yet to speak with him. He explained that he was looking for a hatchling shade sundrake named Moonstone. The little sundrake’s description had matched the one hatchling seen with either Guile or Asp the many times he had seen them both in Memory.
Asp further explained that he and Guile had searched the city high and low without success. Except for one place. The Northern Caverns.
Descry himself didn’t have an issue with caves, he was used to navigating the corners of Sirius. Finding Moonstone, making sure everyone was accounted for, was very important indeed. He was sure Scion Skoll would completely understand.
---
Upon entering the Northern Caverns, the dust and dirt of disuse coated the inside of his nasal passage. This place was not frequented until now. Descry was not alone, Asp and Guile had recruited a few others to sweep the caves for Moonstone. He couldn’t help but eye them suspiciously, his paranoia nagging him in the back of his mind. He clutched his candlestone that he had brought along for light.
Descry opted for the narrower routes, places where larger dragons could not reach. These smaller passages seemed to not branch off too often, which made it easy for navigation. However, the further he went, the smaller it became until it was impossible to continue.
Descry huffed in annoyance and backed up for a while until he was able to turn around. A dead-end here.
He made his way out to the entrance of his chosen tunnel, spotting Asp, Guile, and an unfamiliar dragon with the small Moonstone making their way out of the cave. That had not taken long, maybe an hour or two at most.
He caught up with the four and asked where Moonstone had been in the cave. Asp paused before answering, explaining that they had found Moonstone near a previously unknown exit. An ideal escape route for the hunted dragons holed up in Memory.
He followed the group outside and watched them leave. Descry figured that they would spread the word, or at least tell either Scion Skoll or Talc.
Instead of going to Scion Skoll straight away, Descry turned around and went into the cave again. If Asp, Guile, and others were going to use this as an escape route they would need some sort of security behind them. Just in case.
He eyed the walls, settling on a crevasse near the entrance where the walls became closer. It was just large enough for him to fit himself into, thought a tight fit. Perfect to hide in if made a bit larger.
Descry backed out of the crevasse and the cave itself, now he would tell Scion Skoll of his plan.
---
He laid out his plan, Scion Skoll had already been notified of the possible escape route. Descry explained that to allow Asp, Guile, and more to escape, there would need to be a sort of security or distraction behind them in the case of Tigerlily’s soldiers following.
With Descry, his spear, and a bit of moonviper carving: Descry could make a sort of no-passing zone. The spear striking out to stop any sort of hostile attempt to follow. If at least temporarily.
A candlestone would be placed in front of the crevasse to hide Descry within and light the passing dragons and their surroundings.
There would also need to be a tunnel carved for Descry to quickly exit the cave once his plan had been executed. Said tunnel would be in the back of the crevasse, going straight up and through the top. That would be the longest and most difficult part to carve, as he expected to do that himself.
Since the cavern wasn’t as used as the southern one, he hoped that the carving wouldn’t be an issue. Skoll seemed to agree with the notion—and the entire plan Descry had laid out.
---
His poor claws wept as Descry finally reached the end of his carved exit, light burning his eyes. He breathed in the fresh air before ducking back down into the long tunnel to his crevasse. He had already brought his spear down here and had very carefully practiced the correct movements to effectively spear any unwanted dragon that may pass in the future.
The candlestone placed in front of his crevasse lit up a passing sundrake and the question that plagued his mind before had once again reared its head.
Would you have the guts to spear someone?
To plunge through scale and flesh?
Could you kill someone, even if it was for the right reason?
Descry’s mouth felt dry.
Probably because of all the carving he did.
Probably.
