Description
This is the seventh in a series of drawings of video game girls.Rydia is one of the lead protagonists from the 1991 role playing game Final Fantasy IV. She is a summoner who joins the party after her village is burned down. As a young girl at the time, she suffers from a fear of fire and is devastated to learn that the party's leader Cecil was in part responsible for her mother's death. Over the course of the game, she matures and becomes a fierce warrior whose skills as a summoner are invaluable to the party.
Much like with my drawing of Rosa, I had to really simplify Rydia's appearance for this drawing as my style is certainly nowhere near as detailed as the renders of her. My skills are also much more limited in that regard as well. Still, I did my best to capture her overall appearance.
As always, please feel free to leave a comment below!
Enjoy!

Hi there! Here I am popping up out of nowhere again. I'm pretty pumped about finally being able to spend some time on dA. I've missed all my friends so much. I'm making my "I'm back" comment rounds and I can't resist grabbing this one up first. Talk about right up my alley with this fabulous fantasy lady. I'm not particularly familiar with Final Fantasy. I know of the game but as far as any of the details, themes or characters I'm clueless. It does seem interesting and looks like something I'd enjoy playing had I the time to invest. However, seeing your rendition of some of it's characters makes it look even more riveting. But enough rambling, I need to get to this beautiful art!
The first thing I noticed is that your skills with shading and highlighting are continuing to improve by leaps and bounds. I love how soft it makes her skin and garments look! And that hair pops off the page with that glossy shine. As far as your comments about not being able to get all the detail down, I took it upon myself to look up some images of her from the actual game and I have to say that I disagree with you. I think you captured the details of her costume beautifully. Really, the only thing I noticed that was missing is the pattern on the fabric and that would be intimidating to anyone. I would certainly be apprehensive to try it, fabric patterns not being one of my strong points either. And honestly with the way you drew the rest of the costume, the pattern is not really necessary. The folds of her cape on her shoulders are on point as well as how it falls behind her back in billowing layers. The bead work on her straps and hanging from her belt are well done and add great touches. Even down to all the tiny gold details on her dress you did an incredibly accurate job I would say. That sash wrapped around her waist is particularly impressive. And the boots! Those look killer! If I even attempted them I'd be curled up, bawling in a corner. That outfit as a whole looks so hard! Great execution of a very difficult, intensely detailed character.
As I said before, I really love the shading you did. Not only does it bring depth to her costume, but it really adds dimension and softness to her skin. That bit around her nose makes a huge difference in giving her face a three dimensional look. You drew her facial features beautifully. Despite being a warrior, she has a very calm and approachable demeanor about her here. Her eyes are soft and I love that adorable rosebud mouth! The hair is fabulous in all it's wispy glory. It adds a bit of spice to her soft expression with all it's locks tossed wildly about her face. I can't get over that shine you added! I makes the hair appear as though it glows with health and volume! And I know it seems out of place here, but I have to mention how beautiful the hands are. Her fingers look feminine while still keeping the appearance of a sturdy strength. All in all I love this piece! You did a spectacular job with it! So glad to be back to be able to enjoy all this gorgeous art work!

Wow! This is certainly one of the best comments I've received in a good long while. I really appreciate all of the time you took out to write something so thoughtful. The big takeaway for me is that it was actually very reassuring to know that someone felt I was able to do this character justice from a visual standpoint. You're definitely right to assert that she was intimidating to draw. All those details and fabric patterns! I definitely agonized over what I could get away with simplifying. I also truly appreciate that someone is noticing some of the little things, like the shading of the nose. That's something I've only recently taken to doing and I haven't been certain if people like it or not or if it's effective in creating the illusion of dimension. It's comforting to have one voice say that it does. Obviously I'm super grateful for the stamp of approval of her hair from the Queen of Hair. Thank you so, so much for this!

I was so happy to be able to prowl around on dA and drop some comments. It's been ages since I've had a moment for anything but a daily scribble and occasionally coloring on my newest finished piece. So how have you been? I'm so out of touch with my friends on here that it seems I need to catch up. I have had a habit of randomly disappearing and popping back up on and off because my life has been so hectic lately. As far as your drawing here, I'd say you have a lot to be proud of. When I looked up images of this character I was literally taken aback by the amount of detail swarming every inch of her. I'd probably take one look at that and say "Nope. Ain't doin' it. Not even gonna try." So bravo for even attempting this. And like I said, from what I could tell, you only really simplified it by way of eliminating all those crazy fabric patterns, which would be necessary for the sanity of anyone with our particular skill level. That is some intensive, probably very grueling work for whomever designed her and Lord forbid, actually had to animate her. This is an extremely ambitious character to draw so pat yourself on the back because you deserve it. Keep up the shading too. You're really doing a great job and noses are hard! I struggle immensely with shading them. If you do it wrong, it ruins the entire face so it's scary to even try. Keep it up because you're doing wonderfully!

Honestly that's to be expected though. Life has a way of getting rather crazy when people have as much responsibility as you do. Regardless, it's a treat having you around when things settle down for you.
And to answer your question, I've been decent. I've actually been concentrating a lot on trying to build my audience on Instagram, as things have been kind of stagnant here.
Although you work traditionally, do you have any tips regarding shading and highlights that might translate well for digital work?

It's nice to know that everyone is understanding of that. It's tough to squeeze in "me-time" but I wouldn't have it any other way. I'm glad that I have a husband who is extremely supportive and we try hard to make sure each of us gets some down time. I'm hoping that I can be regular on here because I'm thinking very seriously about attempting to make a bit of money with my art. My part-time job is killing me. I was busy before that and now I'm getting seriously burnt out. I know I have some more improving to do before I can try to sell anything but we'll see.
Instagram, huh? I've been toying around with starting an account there. I've heard good things. I'm glad to know you've been pretty well. Things going ok career-wise?
I would be happy to help you out with shading and highlighting. It's a very frustrating thing to learn, especially on your own. I just had a brain storm. It would be easier for me to show you. If you want, you can send me a line art of this piece and I can make a little tutorial for you on how I would shade it. It wouldn't be hard for me to do it in a way that would translate well with a digital medium. Do you think you'd like that? It would also be helpful for me to know what program you use to color.

Are you still working at the same place as when we last talked?
Yep. Still at the same place. Instagram is a whole other beast. You really have to work hard to grow your audience and get likes. You have to post frequently, use the right hashtags and like a lot of posts.
Oh wow! I might just do that! I use Photoshop (CS6, I believe).

Yep. Only it's gotten crazy because we have a different person doing out schedule and they have no idea what they're doing. We're constantly shorthanded and the place is stupid busy. Getting tired of my much needed Saturdays being half-used by that place.
It sounds pretty tough. Maybe I'll give it a whirl.
Well, let me know if you're interested. I'd be happy to do it.

Roughly how many hours do you work weekly? If you don't mind me asking, that is.

I'm only supposed to work no more than 15 hrs per week kept to three days. We've had a change in the person who makes our schedule though and she has been screwing everyone over. She keeps scheduling me four and five days and with everything else on my plate I simply can't handle that. Fortunately another person is taking over the schedule and I'm going to have a talk with her. The person doing it before didn't even work at our location.

I just went online and adjusted my availability...again. If that doesn't do the trick I'm gonna have to set up a meeting.
