Description Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Part 1 of 5.

As with many children of the '90s, I was obsessed with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers growing up. Though I lost touch with the franchise in my teen years, I recently decided to go back and watch it from the beginning on Netflix. Aside from writing reviews of the series on my blog, I decided to do some drawings of the show's original Rangers. First up is Jason Lee Scott, the first Red Mighty Morphin Power Ranger.

As the team's de facto leader, Jason is characterized by his courage and maturity. At his core, he is an athlete and enjoys many sports. He's on the school's football team and often goes scuba diving in his free time. Jason is shown to be closest to Zack, the Black Mighty Morphin Power Ranger, and later develops a friendly rivalry with Tommy, the then-Green Mighty Morphin Power Ranger. Given his prominence as the leader of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Jason frequently drew the ire of Rita Repulsa's righthand Goldar. Ultimately, Jason opted to leave the team when he, Zack and Trini were elected to be student ambassadors for a teen peace conference in Switzerland.

Despite their simplistic costumes, the Zyuranger outfits are more difficult to draw than you'd think. It's a challenge to get the details right, especially when it comes to those helmets. However, I did my best to capture the essence of those iconic uniforms. For the accompanying drawing of Jason, I decided to go with something that was reflective of his style. He was frequently seen wearing sleeveless sweatshirts, paired with sneakers and jeans. I also tried my best to have him resemble Austin St. John.

I hope you all like this piece! Depending on the feedback, there should be more on the way!

Cool! Amy Jo Johnson actually lives in the same city as me and made the news at the end of last year when she busked downtown wearing a Pink Ranger costume.

I didn't think that you would ever do a take on Jason Lee Scott here, and I have to say that as far as the original Mighty Morphin' team was concerned, it was always a toss up between Jason Lee Scott and Tommy Oliver. The Power Rangers were a prominent part of my childhood until they had changed the cast with the introductions of Rocky, Adam and Aisha. But it's really cool that you decided to do the Red Ranger here and let's go over what I think is particularly strong about this piece.

It stays true to the original design, and looks like the promotional artwork which was done in the 1990s back when Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was in it's heyday and out doing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I say this because if you compare this piece with the promotional artwork which was found on lunch boxes, backpacks, and apparel-- it looks very similar. Especially with how bulky the helmet looks and how the eyes of the tyrannosaurus helmet are pronounced. Now I had to look carefully and see if the belt which you drew was photoshopped on or drawn, and I can see that you used a photo for the morpher buckle. You even went further by using the Power Rangers version instead of the Zyuranger-- so good detail there.

As for the civilian version, I can definitely see that you used some reference of Austin St. John (real name is Jason Geiger) back in the day when he was fitter and younger. The years really haven't been kind to Austin over the last two decades. So I like that you went back to the whole 90s apparel here going on with the sleeveless sweatshirt, and the jeans with sneakers. Definitely a harken back to the days when Mighty Morphin was taking the world by storm! You've done good here.

By the way, you ever seen the Power/Rangers fan film by Adi Shankar?

Thanks for dropping by to leave a comment! I appreciate it.

I'm not entirely sure if you're complimenting the piece or not, since some of the language can be construed as the opposite. But, if you are I'm glad you like the piece and feel like it captures the character.

As for whether I've seen the fan film, I haven't.

I was actually complimenting, I had no malice in my words whatsoever. It has been a while since I commented.
