Description
This is a detailed tutorial geared towards people with a basic working knowledge of GIMP's features. Although we will be using the GAP plugin (separate download from GIMP), the only thing GAP will be used for is converting the video footage. I've provided a QuickTime movie (mov) and an avi of me on the lawnmower (Yeah, I know it's lame, but it's free and I'm making it available for you to use! Can't get any better than that!)The reason I'm interested in this type of stuff is my digital camera provides output in QuickTime (mov) format. I want to be able to use that footage in GIMP. Well, now I can. I've elected to do the tutorial based on sig creation because a lot of people are interested in it and it's a lot easier for me to package for download on the web. But, I encourage you to not limit yourself to signatures and avatars only. Learn to make your own movies with GIMP and GAP!
The tutorial is in html format. Download the zip file to your desktop or other convenient location and extract the html file and the two folders to the same location. Double-click on the html file to view.
As always, I look forward to your questions and comments.
Enjoy!

no it doesn't...GIMP is for image editing and supports converting Video to Gif Images but it is not a video editor.

Great tutorial. Quick question - is there a way to change shape of the video? Lets say I only want to use a portion of each frame and want to embed it in my sig in a round shape, not square/rectangle as in your example.

I have a question and I don't know if anyone has asked yet: Does the instructions to: "Click on the chain next to any frame to turn on the link button, then Shift+Click on the same frame to link all layers. " apply to any layered project (like the simple animations) or just GAP ones?

Well, I haven't found a good enough digital film I want to try it with. I mean the lawn mowing is just hard to follow. Sorry just couldn't help ribbing you about the mowing movie. I haven't found one I want to use yet. I will eventually though. I don't want to do the usual and use the same film you put in. No offense. I want to make something that is meaningful to me. I have to do that more often. But this will work out great I am sure once I get into it.
Take care

Hi I just had a quick question on this. At step 1 u show having "Split video into frames" in your menu list under "Script-Fu" in my list that's not there at all. Is that an additional plug in that I need? If so please tell me which one it is so I can find it. And if it's not too much trouble a link to the photoshop plug-in as well would be very much appreciated. (yes I do have Photoshop CS2.)
Thanks for any help that u can give me, and for making this tutorial in the 1st place.

Hmmm, I thought I covered the download information of the GIMP Animation Plugin at the beginning of the tutorial.....If you're using Windows, you can download it here: [link] (Look at the bottom of the page). Download it, unzip, and double-click to install. Then, if everything went correctly, you'll see that menu option appear.
I'm not sure what plugin you are referring to with Photoshop. I don't believe I covered any PS plugins in this tutorial. If you can give me some more information, I'll do my best to help you out, but I'm not a PS user so details will be very limited.
Hope you find the tutorial useful. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I see your problem.......you're a Luongo fan! Just kidding...That joker rocks. He's stopped my Bolts many a time.
Actually, there's two things working against you with gif animations: color limitations (you can only have a maximum 256 colors in a gif) and the optimization process is working against you in this case. Sometimes optimization works, sometimes it doesn't. In this case it didn't help.
I suggest you open the gif up in GIMP, go to Filters Menu > Animation > Unoptimize and then save the unoptimized version. This should help the quality, but how much, I can't really tell. Unfortunately, unoptimizing will most likely make the file size increase a LOT.
I know this probably isn't what you wanted to hear, but that's the way it is. IMO, though, it's not that bad a sig at all.
I appreciate you giving this tutorial a try. I thought this one would be very popular with GIMPers, but I've gotten almost no feedback on it. Thanks again and let me know if you still have questions.

No actually I didn't even see that one. I am too tired at the moment to even figure out what they are saying. . I was just reminiding you of the different OS systems that is all. I get a little cranky when people don't think of Linux...hee,hee..Do what ever you think is right in that case.

Oh, Ok. I'll make sure that I'm careful about referencing OS's properly. I generally try no to discuss anything "installation-wise" when it comes to Linux due to the my complete lack of knowledge in that regard, as well as the differences that exist (at least this is what I've been told) between the various offerings of Linux. So, for Windows users, I can just say, "double-click" and it installs, but not for Linux. I do like to point users to the download locations just in case they don't have it or need an updated version.
Thanks for the comments.

Ahh Fence better find out what OS people are using before you tell them how it installs. If they are using s different OS like me it is done differently. Actually it is eaiser cause I didn't have to download it when I got GAP cause it was in my Synaptic packages. I have linux so it comes with the system. Just a heads up. Okay I will stand in the corner now.

Ok. If you're referring to the statement about installing GAP on Linux, I only added that at the request of another Linux user. I'm not familiar at all with Linux systems. So, if that's what it is, I'll remove that line immediately to avoid further confusion. My apologies. Thanks.

Actually, you don't put it in a folder. Just download the file to your desktop and double-click on it. GAP will self-install and once you restart GIMP, you should see the Video Menu at the top of the image window. Does that help?

Hey!! Great stuff! All that hard work has finally paid off eh? I did see DBJ's tut, and i know that you would never rip off anothers' idea. That thought would never even enter my head and i know everyone who watches you and knows you from GT would never think that either.Anyway, after i follwed the tut, i tried to add my new image to a sig, and failed dismally, so this tut will set me right! I know how hard you work for our benefit and its greatly appreciated.
On the subject of converting Video files, if you ever have a format that GAP wont recognise, but you want to use, then there is a freeware Video Encoder that converts all video files to any video format.. so if you have a WMV or XvID format, then you can convert it to .MOV or .AVI quickly and easily.Β its called SUPERΒ©
I primarily use it as it converts all these formats to .VOB files that can be burned to DVD, and played on your standard DVD playerΒ
Β Thanks for this Fence. We really do appreciate it.. (Me especially)!!!

Thanks for the comments! Very much appreciated! Well, I am always trying to be careful about stepping on other people's toes and since the timing is so cooincidental, I'm sure there could be some suggestions to the fact that I was copying. I don't think it will, but have covered the bases, if necessary.
I hope you can successfully create the signature without any problems. I have had another user tell me in the comments here that they are having difficulty with the tutorial in some area and will be sending me some screenshots. So, hopefully, this is a limited problem and I haven't posted something that's riddled with errors.
That SUPER(C) is an excellent resource you've given to me. It's amazing that never turned up in my Google search (maybe I stepped right over it?) I will definitely try that out as I've been using RadVideoTools (an excellent program, but I'm always looking for others). RAD will only convert to avi, so maybe this one will be that much better.
If you have any problems with the tutorial, please let me know asap. This way I can clarify everything as soon as possible so others don't run into the same mistakes.
Thanks again.

I stumbled upon SUPER whilst fruitlessly searching for a way to convert an AVI film to a DVD file. My dvd brner will only burn WMV files so after literally hours and hours of searching, i found a cool site called Video Help
It gave me exactly what i was looking for. I wanted to convert a free movie i downloaded but it was in the wrong format. SUPER helped me to do it. It looks quite daunting at first, but there is a guide here
Also the After Dawn forums are a good knowledge base too! I now have a very eclectic collection of DVD's from my own creations. Great stuff!

Oh, and I started reading it, would you please put in instead of:
"and Linux users ([link] )."
"also, Debian/Ubuntu users can run the following command:
sudo apt-get install gimp-gap".
Believe me, that's a lot easier then compiling from source.
