Here I am, disappointed in Deviantart's not including "Overwhelming, brilliant weirdness" in its Mature content topics. Because the symbolism in Gerald Scarfe's work for The Wall is exactly that: the surreal nightmare of Pink's psychological turmoil, his impotence and incapacity to feel, his grotesque envisionment of the people outside the wall, every frame of iconic pieces like What Shall We Do Now? or The Trial are designed by this superbe animator to intertwine and connect according to a brutal but meticolous logic; how could ever be possible to condensate the themes of war, emotional abuse, drugs, dictatorship and amorality, infidelity and motherly love, overprotectiveness and rebellion in a movie of ordinary length? Combine coherently the personal deviance of one man's suffering and madness with the plagues of the modern world? Convey all of this through recitation, drawings and music in one precious gem of cinematic history? And yet, they did it: this is my homage to one of the men who contributed more to the making of this masterpiece, who translated Pink Floyd's musical genius into exquisitely metaphorical animations, although they often may seem a bit...off the wall.
