Epilogue ~A new start~

After days of travelling you arrived to your villa… or at least what it was left of it, your heart stopped when you saw the burned mansion in which you lived 5 years of your life beside your father, in your insides a sensation of déjà vu was awakening.

You went down of the horse and guided him through the growing scrubs of the front part until reaching the entrance of the house, the smell of calcinated material was intoxicating, you had to cover your nose with your arm and slightly narrow your eyes to reduce the irritation caused by the smoke. When you entered you could see the grim ambience, all the debris were covered with that coal black tone, the curtains, the floor, the walls, the half fallen ceiling, everything.

Clearing the way to the stairs and up you looked for the door of your father’s studio, ever since you were a little girl you remembered him there, always, so your first instinct was to look for him in there, you only wished your intuition had mistaken this time but sadly it hadn’t. When you finished from destroying what was left from the door, you could see at the other side of the room, the remains of the being that had protected you from the very beginning lying burned on its desk, the memory of him waving at you that day came to you and then it everything made sense, he knew they would be coming for him, he knew it all this time.

Maybe if someone else had found their father in this state they would be probably a ball of sobs in the ground, asking themselves why didn’t they stay, why didn’t they say I love you one last time, why didn’t they hugged him more, but you felt strangely calm, as if you had been waiting for this, and maybe deep inside you did.

-Riposa in pace padre(rest in peace father)-You murmured as you walked to him, the smell of burned hum flesh was enough to make you gag but you managed to not throw up right there.

You were getting ready to move his body and give him a proper burial in the garden when you noticed something out of place, his right hand was pointing exactly were an unrecognizable paint of someone still hung. You looked at it during a long time doubtfully, maybe it was only your imagination but maybe it wasn’t.

–I have nothing to lose anyway. –You sighed and walked towards the painting to remove it from the wall, your eyes opened at the surprise of finding what looked like a loose part of the structure, when you removed it a metallic chest appeared. –What… -You gasped and took it from there putting it after on the damaged desk of your father; examining it you noticed that it needed a key. –Cazzo (fuck) –you cursed under your breath but bit your lip right away looking at the corpse of your father, as if he would woke up from the sleep of the dead and scold you just like when you were little.

Searching everywhere in the room, you finally found the key inside a cabinet of the desk covered by many half-burned papers. With all the care you have, you introduced the key in the lock and slowly turned it to the right, your eyes lightened up when you heard that familiar “click” echoing in the room and with trembling hands lifted hesitantly the top of the object to discover that in the insides, a quantity of intact letters lied.

-This… -You picked up one of the letters randomly, checking first your family crest embodied in a wax seal before turning it around to find a dedication “per il mio caro (Y/N) (To my dearest)” and a roman number, this one had the number 6. You picked another with the number 2, and so you went until all of them were out summing 13 placed in order on the desk. You took a step backwards to admire the work and smirked before closing your eyes.

–You were always this clever… thank you… -Some tears appeared at last, he had done it for you, he had left you what you needed to know inside all those letters, he had given you the first push to start this journey but there was still a long way to go, there was still a lot of work to be done.
