Despite all of the times I've tried, I've never really been able to acheive such a smooth transition between a very dark composition and light, but well contrasted focus-point. I'm digging this quite a bit, man.

A tip for shooting in high contrast situations like this is to underexpose by 2/3 to 1 stop or so. It makes the shadows more pronounced, keeps the highlights from blowing out, and also guarantees better color saturation.
