I don't paint much but this seems to make sense to me. Paint a flat solid base coat of all of your shapes then add highlights with a lighter colour adn shadows with a darker colour (or mix some adding white or black) rather than just applying it lightly over the paper to get that colour.

Ok well here goes...

You ought to add some shading to the trees. Most trees don't appear as a single tone. Choose a light direction and how bright it would be and go from there.

Also, the picture is a bit bland with nothing but the trees in it. You ought to add something for the ground, but grass wouldn't fit the picture, and dirt would be boring. My idea would be something like dark reddish and brownish leaves and stuff as a ground, but don't use any greens or too much yellow because it would make the picture to happy to be dead. If you did want to use a green make it a dark and muddy green rather than a bright one.

You could have added some sticks to the ground perhaps? Like rotting tree stumps and broken sticks to make it look like the trees have been dead for a very long time.

If you have ever seen the movie called "The Village" by M. Night Shamalayn you might get an idea of some of the ideas I expressed here. He is a genious at creating different atmospheres to create different things.

Hehe sorry I don't know anything about oil paints, but I hope that helps!

hehe, thanks, it's very helpful, gives me some ideas, though you won't be seeing another version of dead tree woods, that was just a practice.
