and now for the story.
-----------------------------------------
The midday sun was just starting to bathe the horses in the out paddocks. One of the mares seemed very content with the bright sunlight. Duskling, covered in mud from head to toe was peacefully stretched out sleeping. This mare was really one of a kind. We had let her loose in just one of the mare paddocks, Just to give her a little bit of room to move, but I had just received word that she would be entered into the up and coming Khan Cohban Farms Horse Trials. It would mean that we would have to travel some distance, but it would be the perfect opportunity for Duckie’s first outing.
My hand reached for a Duckies purple halter and started out towards her. I watched her head lift slightly looking at me and then lay down again. There were so many things that I would need to do to get her head for this competition. She had all the training under her, but I was more worried about keeping her clean and awake. As I approach it wasn’t hard to notice that Duckie was going out of her way to ignore me. Oh she wasn’t getting out of work that easy.
I gently bend down beside her and scratch her ear. “Come on Duckie.” Lazily a dark brown orb looks at me. Slowly she sits up and allows me to place the halter on her. Then with a little more encouragement she rises to her feet. I knew that what i had planned would mean another nap for her, at least i hoped. Slowly we made our way to a stall in which I let her go loose. I brought her some food and then i settled in for some time consuming work. I plated her mane and tail carefully only to have her find the stable wall to rub against. Maybe the plaits weren’t going to work for us.
I left her to her scratching as i went to fetch a bridle and Duckies stock saddle. I saddled her up and walked her out towards the arenas. At this time of day there was usually a lesson being held, so I stayed clear of the indoor arena, and decided to work her in the outdoor arena. The training was going well very well in fact, after all the main problem i knew was going to be the braids and keeping her awake in the line.
Yet just as we were finishing up you could say disaster almost struck. The lightest of sun showers had started to poor down upon us. I could feel the cold water slowly seeping through my clothes and onto my skin; It was beautiful after all the hard work we had just partaken in. I noticed that as soon as it started to rain Duckies demeanour had changed. We hadn’t yet ridden her in the rain, I watched her carefully to see what to expect.
She didn’t move just stood there but she seemed very interested in the rain, she seemed much more content. I pushed her into a quick two beat around the arena once more, she seemed to fly. I think if on the day it rained we were going to win for sure.
