   Hayner had seen how easily girls threw themselves at Seifer – when he had asked, Olette had replied 'it's his charm'. So now Seifer was charming, huh? Well that sucked.

   He also remembered back when they were kids and his mother complimented Seifer on his good manners. There seemed to have been an astounding lack of those manners in their dealings recently.

   Seifer might not have been chivalrous, but he did hold doors open for girls if they were carrying something, and did try to be nicer to Olette than the other three.

   Debate club, year seven. Seifer's team against Hayner's. Yeah, Seifer won. It turned out he could come up with several surprisingly in-depth arguments full of words Hayner had never even heard of before.

   Seifer was reasonably intelligent, it was true. However, he was dyslexic, and much preferred practical subjects, despite his abilities in Maths. Well, at least Hayner was better than him at something. And yes, Hayner was also quite smart; he was doing pretty well in most of his classes except Textiles, which yes, he had taken, goddammit.

   It was with grudging admiration that Hayner watched Seifer trying to teach their mutual little cousin how to make a lego spaceship (no, they weren't blood related – the man Hayner's aunt had married was the brother of Seifer's mother) as he helped the other two (twin little girls) to bake cookies without killing themselves or anybody else.

   Seifer wasn't kind, exactly. He was a bully and a complete nuisance most of the time, but he did have his moments. One in particular that Hayner remembered was when they had found a baby bird when they were little and had attempted to nurse it back to health. Sadly it had died, but back then Seifer had even hugged Hayner because he was sad. Ah, the innocence of youth.

   When they kissed, it was rough and hard and fast and not gentle at all.

   Most of the time, Seifer had pretty good table manners, when he was eating at a table. Hayner only realised why when he'd seen Seifer absently lean his head on his hand with his elbow on the table and Seifer's mother flicked it, hard, with a spoon.

   The younger blonde had mostly gotten used to being called 'Chickenwuss' and 'lamer' and 'Blondie' and any other names Seifer thought up – they were irritating, but they were no longer enough to get a rise out of him.

   It was safe to say that Seifer was not 'proper' at all. Especially at the times when he snuck through Hayner's bedroom window…

   Seifer was generally pretty good about not randomly turning up on Hayner's doorstep – he always said he 'didn't want to impose' to Hayner's parents, which made his mother go all 'you come over whenever you like, sweetie'. Sadly, this was before Seifer turned up out of the blue and as soon as Hayner opened the door, slammed him against the wall and proceeded to have a thorough make out session with him, forcing Hayner out of his closet.

   Hayner knew that being late pissed Seifer off to no end, so when he turned up fifteen minutes after they had agreed to meet, he had assumed that Seifer wouldn't have hung around. He was right that Seifer wasn't there, but then the older blonde had come running up the hill, a complete mess (apparently he'd been tackled by about seven kids), swearing and saying he was sorry he was late. Hayner had seen no reason to tell him that he himself had been late, as it meant that he got to top that night.

   That goddamn beanie irritated the hell out of Hayner. But Seifer insisted on wearing it. He thought it made him look badass. Hayner thought it was pointless vanity.
"Well," Seifer had said, "at least I take pride in my appearance."

   "Hey lamer!" Hayner had turned to see his boyfriend striding across the Sandlot towards him at a furious pace. Expecting a fight, he immediately scowled, but Seifer had instead grabbed him and spun him around before kissing him senseless.
"So what're you doing Friday?"
"Uhh…" Hayner had shaken his head to clear it, a little dizzy from that kiss. "Nothing. Why?"
"Oh, y'know. Wanna get married?"

   It rained that Saturday, which kind of sucked for a wedding, but hey, they were married. And that thought still made Hayner's heart beat faster out of nerves. They raced out of the registry office and into the downpour, where thy saw a young woman nervously stepping out, wearing just a flimsy summer dress, without an umbrella. Without missing a beat, Seifer went over and gave her theirs. Hayner figured they could just get out of their wet clothes when they got home.

   Hayner was in two minds about Seifer finally ditching the beanie. Now that it was gone, he kind of missed it, the bastard thing. But it did go to a good cause… There'd been a girl at the bus stop, crying her heart out because she'd just received news that her boyfriend who had been serving in Hollow Bastion had been killed in action. Hayner had eventually shuffled along the seat quite awkwardly to hesitantly put an arm around her shoulders, and she'd just cried into his shirt for a while, until Seifer also came across and, failing to find a handkerchief, offered her his beanie to use to wipe her eyes. When their bus came, he told her she could keep it, and they'd seen her a few days ago wearing it along with what had evidently been her boyfriend's shirt.

Looking down at the sleeping face of his husband, Hayner smiled; he wasn't a gentleman by any stretch of the imagination, but he liked him just as he was.
