Description
What you see before you,Clad in happy glee,
Is a mask,
Made especially by me.
For your benefit,
The real self is hidden,
Behind this veil,
I change it at your bidding.
My many veils, many masks,
My life is but a joke,
This stranglehold around my neck,
Makes me feel as though I'll choke.
I change at will,
To fit your image of me,
Always hiding,
Never free.
A good child,
A friendly neighbour,
A loving friend,
An earnest labourer.
My many veils, many masks,
My life is but a joke,
This stranglehold around my neck,
Makes me feel as though I'll choke.
A listening ear,
A strong, protecting persona,
A vicious enemy,
A quiet loner.
But you, you puzzle me,
What do you want?
What mask should I bestow upon you?
All I know is your taunts.
My many veils, many masks,
My life is but a joke,
This stranglehold around my neck,
Makes me feel as though I'll choke.
You throw me off-kilter,
One minute kind,
The next hateful,
I want a mask for you to find.
But how can I make a mask,
When what you want is hidden?
Tell me how to please you,
Let me do your bidding.
My many veils, many masks,
My life is but a joke,
This stranglehold around my neck,
Makes me feel as though I'll choke.
You see through my veils,
No matter what I throw,
Your way, you see through,
Everything I show.
Maybe this is the mask you want,
The confused, unmasked,
Tender, broken, unprotected human being?
The one that cannot do as you have asked.
My many veils, many masks,
My life is but a joke,
This stranglehold around my neck,
Makes me feel as though I'll choke.
I stand before you,
Without my masks I am naked,
You reach out to me,
Touch me and I am shaking.
So nervous, I can barely breathe,
You draw me to you, your arms so strong,
Me without my masks, I realise,
This is what you wanted all along.
No more veils, no more masks,
Is my life a joke?
The grip around my neck is loosening,
The stranglehold you broke.
