Here it is! Finally! My Manga Studio Debut 4.0 Tutorial.

This is a very brief look into how basic functions work on Manga Studio. I may not have been very clear on some steps since I was trying to keep this as small as possible. If you need any help please do comment!

Were you able to create this tutorial in Manga Studio 5? I'm trying to create a vertical comic with more than four panels. The set up I'm looking for this particular project will be something similar to this tutorial.Β

Hi! Sorry this reply is so late - I barely log into dA anymore. You can do anything from Manga Studio 4 in Manga Studio 5, and more. The trouble is the controls are different, or things have different names, so it's really a case of getting used to things. The only downside to Manga Studio 5 is it has much less tones available (or the non-EX version does, at least). On the flip side to that, you can turn patterns and even stuff you've coloured and shaded into tones by changing the layer properties, so it's not much of a problem.

For Manga Studio 5, I'd recommend looking at this Youtube channel: www.youtube.com/channel/UC8bW1… While I personally don't draw in the same style as him, his videos explain a lot of the features of Manga Studio 5 so it's great for learning how to use the program.

To answer your particular question, it's much easier to change the image/page size in Manga Studio 5, so it'd be very easy for you to create a vertical comic.

Hi! Β Thank you so much for this tutorial! ! Β You don't know how long I've been searching for a manga studio debut 4 tutorial such as this one Β  One question though would you possibly be able to check out my gallery, Β and maybe give me some tips on how to improve my lineart skills if you have time of course. Β  When I use the program, I have it set up with the line correction option for the pens. Β Is this good to have active? Β Thank you!

Hi there! I'm sorry this comment is so late - I barely ever log into dA anymore. I've had a quick look at your gallery and your art is brilliant!! It's so professional looking!! O: Ummm, for tips to improve...Your lineart is very neat and very smooth, so no worries on that front.Β

One thing I like to do is to make the lines slightly thicker in areas where there is shadow (eg. under the chin, where skin appears under clothes) - not a lot - just a tiny bit to make the lines a bit more dynamic.
Another thing I do when working with colour is to change the colour of the lineart. So, for lines around skin I usually make the lines reddish purple or brown. For a pink shirt, I'd make the lines around that dark pink.

The thing is, aside from being neat and smooth (which you clearly have down), the style of your lineart is really personal choice(!!!!). These are things I do, but that's not necessarily the right way. I always, always read tutorials when I see them because it's so useful just picking up bits and pieces from lots of different people, so if you want inspiration, I'd really recommend 'shopping around', as it were, and find what suits you best!

I think line correction helps to keep your lines smooth (?) but I can't remember as it's been removed in Manga Studio 5 (or it's called something else, I'm not sure...) so it's probably good to have on. But you can try it without and see if it suits you more?

Thank you so much for taking the time to check out my gallery ! Β Although to be honest, my skills are far from being professional but I have noticed several improvements. Β I have tried changing the lineart color a few times, and I do like how it looks but somehow I still prefer solid black. Β But I will try that tip on thicker lines on certain areas though. Β Thank you again for the compliments and for taking the time to respond back to me!

How did you color in the eyes?? I always seem to have the most trouble with that part..

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Fiona-Maria In reply to YokaiTenshi95 [2013-11-24 20:33:45 +0000 UTC]

In this case I selected the eye as shown and then crosshatched the area I wanted to shade, leaving the 'iris' part (which is a little hard to pick out when it's anime/manga style x'D) blank. Then I would cross hatch a little more on the darker parts, shading a little less of the eye each time. I would keep doing this until the part closest to the highlight on the eye was black. Then I would erase where I wanted the highlight to be.

If you use the magic brush tool (I think it's called? I'm afraid I don't have MS3 anymore! ): ) there's also a cross hatching brush which might make it easier.

Hopefully this makes sense!

Thanks a bunch!! The controls on MS3 are similar to the manga studio 5 so hopefully it works out! Thank you again very much!

I have a giant question for you:

You wouldn't happen to know the settings to simulate correctly an etching tool or...is it possible to create brushes? I really hate that tone use brush to create softer shadows and was wondering if someone else found a solution.

Thank you!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Fiona-Maria In reply to djwagLmuffin [2012-09-30 18:37:55 +0000 UTC]

In the control tab at the bottom, there's a black square, white square, and transparent square (well, it's got grey and white squares inside). These set what colour your brush/pen works in. When I want to make softer shadows, I tend to put down a tone in block shadows, then choose an airbrush brush (which you have much more control over) and set it to transparent, and rub stuff away.

This might be useless now since it's such a late reply, sorry about that! D:

Hi! Your tutorial has helped me immensely but I have a question. Is the font "Manga Template" something you have to download or does it come with MS4? I own MS4 but it doesn't have Manga Template :C

The--Moniklr [2011-05-05 01:25:33 +0000 UTC]

It's a very beautiful tutorial! Especially when it comes to the lineart. Usually I end up just using the different sized markers, but then it doesn't seem as though I get the depth that I want, or had in the sketch.

I have a question: do you create an outline BEFORE you draw the page or do you just wing it with a sketch then finish it up? I want another persons opinion XD;;

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Fiona-Maria In reply to kayamalie [2011-01-16 14:45:39 +0000 UTC]

Usually I do an extremely rough outline of the whole chapter (with the worst stick figures ever XD), to establish the panel layout and that, before I do any pages. I'm awful at keeping pace otherwise. 8'DD

There may be downloads out there somewhere, but I bought it, so I don't know. (Or rather, my parents did - it was a birthday present.)
You can get a free trial at their site, though: [link] ^^ I think you need payment details to get it, though, and you have to cancel the trail before the end or they'll charge you. >>;;
