Description
I woke up early, while the sky was still stained with the colors of the sunrise. When I had decided to go back to sleep a let my eyes slide shut I felt a breeze against my cheek. It was a warm breeze and it carried the scent of wildflowers which only made it stranger in my stale little apartment with the windows closed. Once I sat up in bed I could feel that sun-warmed breeze blowing in from the living room. I wrapped myself in my blue silk robe and followed that gentle waft of air.For the second time in two days someone who I had never seen before was sitting on my couch. I found myself staring at a man who seemed very masculine and yet would have been hard to describe without words like "pretty" or "beautiful". His faded blue jeans and white dress shirt set off skin that didn't appear to be so much tanned as flushed and his bright blond hair fell in curly waves to his waist. Although there was already something odd about him that was hard to place the thing that was obviously inhuman about him where his eyes, unless they where amazing contacts. From his incredibly small pupils out they began with a deep purple before fading into a sky blue, similar to my own eye color and then they where edged with the color of new leaves. He sat barefoot on my couch as if it where his throne with sun-kissed air and the perfume of flowers pouring off of him in nearly intoxicating waves. He stood and took a bow that didn't fit with his modern clothes or my shabby apartment and made me feel more awkward in the robe.
"I am sorry to intrude I must speak with you Eme." I tried to be angry but I found out that its very hard when your mind is filled with images of green meadows and butterflies.
"Who are you and why do you need to talk to me?"
"I am Belenus, prince of the spring Sidhe but you may call me Ben and it has become apparent to us that you, fair lady have become of importance to our half-bread allies and therefore ourselves." It took me a moment or two to realize that by "half-breads" he must have meant the beings who I had met last night but the rest didn't mean much of anything to me.
"the spring Sidhe?" I asked and he smiled down at me and it felt like when a branch moves above your head and the sun shines on your skin for a moment.
"You know us as the Fae or fairies but most of your tales have become far from accurate and spring is simply my personal season of power, when I am my strongest." I blinked up at this man who had just told me he was a fairy and found it hard to respond intelligently.
"shouldn't you have wings then?" His frown made me feel oddly sad but it only lasted a moment like a cloud briefly blocking the sun.
"As I said most of your tales are inaccurate at best. There are creatures in my world who have wings but most of them are like the insects that buzz around your own." I felt a blush in my cheeks and he laughed, a cheery, jubilant sound.
"I am sorry for the laughter but I promise that I do not take you for a fool and we have much more serious things than this to worry about."
"What kind of serious things?"
"We know that you are well on your way to making a decision that will put you in a very dangerous position. Please do not take this as a threat, we are only interested in informing you." Now I was just more confused but luckily he seemed willing to explain himself when necessary.
"What do you want to inform me about then?"
"I have not come to warn you against the half-breeds offer. This life could become quite suited to you and excepting it will likely be less harmful than its refusal but you must be prepared for everything it will mean. There will be human and half-breeds alike who will lash at you but you will also have allies and I beg that you watch for them." Listening to him speak was a little like keeping track of a dancers steps without getting distracted by her costume but I managed.
"All that you wanted to tell me was to look for people who will help me? That's why you had to come to my apartment at daybreak?" I was getting frustrated but he didn't notice or was ignoring it.
"For that and for this." He held up a long clear crystal, held on a chain by a complex design of curling golden wire. "Wear this." He said, handing it to me. Once I had taken the necklace he reached to one side and made a pulling motion in the air. It was like reality itself shifted and the empty space tore open, revealing a swirling mass of color and light. Ben stepped through that wavering opening and while I was still speechless it sealed behind him as quickly as it had opened.
So what are you supposed to do after your visited by a fairy prince while dressed in your bathrobe? I wish I knew but after I stopped staring at nothing like a burned out hippie I decided to get a shower and some clean clothes. In an hour I was fully dressed in punkish splattered and ripped long sleeve t-shirt to cover my wrists and skinny jeans with the crystal hanging around my neck. Remembering that I had never succeeded in my main goal yesterday I called up the guitarist and drummer before heading out the door. I had been extremely lucky and they had both been available and agreed to meeting me at Masque before it opened and I still had enough time to grab breakfast on the way. I stopped at my favorite bakery for a fresh lemon muffin and some doughnuts to offer as an apology for yesterdays inconvenience.
When I finally arrived at Masque I approached the building with a level of caution that verged of paranoia but nothing seemed out of place and no one was waiting inside this time. I I left the door open and set up one of the little wrought-iron along the wall with three chairs and the doughnut offerings before going up to check on the equipment. The club had a mic and I had brought along my amp so I got set up but I knew no matter what we would have to wait for the drummer.
As soon as the thought formed in my head, a guy with neon green and black hair in a sort of "emo" style walked in the door carrying the first of what I knew would be several gig bags. He had a very small frame, thin body accentuated by tight, dark clothing and he looked about 5'4", a couple inches shorter than me which you dont see very often in guys. It took me a moment to remember what he had said his name was on the phone.
"Hey Tony, glad you could make it. Do you want any help with your drums?" He grinned and made it cocky in that way that some guys do without thinking, making the two silver rings in his lip catch the light from the stage.
"No thanks, I'm used to hefting them around." He brought in the rest of his drums and set them up, making a show of it and smirking at me occasionally but I could already tell that he was probably behaving himself. Tony was almost finished when the guitarist showed up, stumbling in with his instrument on his back and his long black hair sleep-tousled around his broad shoulders.
"Hello Tyler, sorry to interrupt your beauty sleep but I brought doughnuts if it helps." Tony grinned at me from the stage.
"Hey you diddnt offer me any of your sweets." That made me more sure that he had been trying to behave before but it did make me laugh which is a good sign.
"You can have the ones in the box on the table just like Tyler." He faked a pout before hopping off the stage and we all sat at the table. We spent about ten minutes talking about our past experience and musical preferences before anyone touched an instrument. When we got to the music we played a dozen songs, from oldies to death metal and I was impressed by both of them and their ranges. Besides being impressed by them this was also the first time in a while that I felt right on stage. I had just met them but I already liked working with them and they seemed happy playing, whether they cared about my singing or not I dont know but everyone was happy.
When fingers, vocal chords, and arms where tired I called everyone back to the table and got water for everyone from behind the bar.
"So what do you guys think? Want to start a band?" Tony was smiling and nodding like an excited child while Tyler's smile was much more subtle and it was accompanied by a long sigh that made it clear he had something to say.
"I know that we've all been through a lot but its been really hard on me, going from band to band so fast. I want to do this and I really want it to work out for us but dont expect too much excitement right away from me." There was a moment of looking into his dark brown eyes where I understood that he was letting me know that he had been hurt and he was trusting me not to make him feel weak.. Tony's smile had softened and his steal gray gaze told me that Tyler had been heard loud and clear by everyone. With that emotional baggage out of the way everyone was more peaceful and the smiles returned even brighter.
"I guess we just need to find a bassist now, I'll keep my ad up but now it should be easier with all but one member." There where nods all around and we made tentative plans to meet again in two days before we started packing up.
"Are you sure you dont want so help there Tony?"
"Sure, why not?" he pointed to a bag and grinned broadly, I diddnt understand why until we got outside. Parked at the curb was a full size black van with green and purple flames down the sides. The grin haddnt left his face for a second and it looked like it was part pride, part flirt. I just shook my head and finished loading everything into the back but it did make me pause a moment when I saw the bed inside and I could hear him laughing beside me.
"I'm sorry Eme but I just had to see that look on your face. I'll be good now."
"Of course now that your leaving."
"You already know me so well." with that we both climbed in our cars and left in a cheerful mood.
