Description A friend's mother was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. There's not much I can do about that so I did what I know best: I made her a scarf. I don't think I've ever seen her wear or associate with anything pink, but I'm not the one who chose the colors for the awarenesses.

I'm sorry the pics aren't that great.. I took them in a rush because I had class soon but I wanted her to get it ASAP (October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month here in the U.S.). I left it on her bed placed like the pic on the left so she'd find it in the ribbon shape when she walked in The middle one is obviously a close-up and the one on the right is a size reference (you know I'm tired and in a rush when I'm wearing the coke-bottle glasses instead of contacts! lol)

Technical stuff:
pattern: shell trellis
dimensions: 72" x 4.25" (yeah, it's kind of skinny, but the way the pattern repeated would make it wider than I wanted if I did another repeat.. meh)
8/G hook, but I crochet kind of tight.

P.S.- If you're interested in awareness scarves, `PinkyMcCoversong knit one for ovarian cancer with pockets for metaphorical ovaries: [link]
Check it out. Be inspired. Go make something.

P.P.S.- I select "Advanced Critique Encouraged" for a reason. Go for it.

EDIT #2: Features
This scarf has been featured in three awesome articles! I highly recommend checking them all out... they're all for a great cause:
~Soulfighter 's Breast Cancer Awareness Features news article
~M-PlayC3ll 's BCA Features journal
#ArtisanCraft 's BCA Features journal--and every other feature in this one is a craft! It doesn't get much better than that

I give #dAKnitters and #ArtisanCraft permission to post this.

She must have been so touched... that was very nice of you. I like how you laid it out in ribbon form-

Thanks. The girl I made it for did like it (though she's not very girly so I don't think she'll ever wear it ) and from what I hear her mom's doing well. Her hair was even growing back when I last saw her a couple months ago!

The shell pattern was a very good choice for this scarf. It looks very feminine (of course, the color does that, too). Lovely! And for such a wonderful cause!

Wow!! This is a really great scarf!!! I wish I had more patience with scarves :C but this is fantastic!!! Have you ever thought of knitting one and posting it up on artists for charity??? Or that ebay-charity site??

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

flutterbyfae In reply to DekeNicki [2007-03-19 01:32:25 +0000 UTC]

Thanks
I wish I had more patience with colorwork. We're even

This scarf is already given away, but the suggestion intrigues me. I don't think dA's Artists for Charity do that... I think theirs might be photos/etc only (at least that's how the print program works, but I don't think AfC goes beyond that into physical, handmade goods). [note: all speculation on my part. I'd recommend asking them yourself if you're interested]

I'm not much of an ebay person so I didn't even know about their charity site! Thanks so much for telling me! I was considering Etsy.com (not that I have an account there yet, either), but that's not solely for charity works.

I have so many options now
First choice is distribute scarves/hats/etc myself to people, but selling them and donating the profit is always a welcome choice as well. Thanks again for the suggestions!

^___^ You're welcome!! I'd do something like that (well, I was going to knit a bunch of kippahs and give them to a children's agency or something for poorer kids who are reaching bat/bar mitzvah age) but first I have to take care of my HUGE commission list

But yeah, I thinkyou're right about the AfC thing... sometimes I think the easiest thing to do is just raise money through a journal or something

Yeah... my list of projects is the same way. So much to make for friends/family that I barely have time for other stuff

Good luck finishing up all you have to do! Hope you'll get to those children's agencies someday

it's a wonderful cause. what did your mom's friend say when she recieved it?

beautiful pattern. by any chance do you have a link?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

flutterbyfae In reply to itsrainingumbrellas [2007-01-19 18:57:52 +0000 UTC]

Scratch that, reverse it: it was a friend's mom, lol. I don't know what her mom said (we're not close.. just acquaintances through my friend), but my friend liked it.

I'll post the pattern in the dev description and check that I have the people in question in the right order. It's a crocheted shell trellis... so a bunch of shells and lots of chains.. not too complicated at all. Do you knit/crochet? I didn't see anything like that in your gallery.

itsrainingumbrellas In reply to flutterbyfae [2007-01-21 10:45:07 +0000 UTC]

cool thanks for posting the pattern. i do knit - mainly scarves because i learned a short while ago through the internet so i'm starting slow. i vaguely know the basics of crochet but i lost my hook so i haven't been able to start practising (no yarn/craft stores around here really). thanks again for the pattern. i do want to start up so it will definitely come in handy

flutterbyfae In reply to itsrainingumbrellas [2007-01-27 00:19:39 +0000 UTC]

no problem

Ugh.. losing hooks/needles sucks (and I can't believe you don't have a craft store near you! what about a Wal-mart or other such store? some of those have a craft section)
You should post some of your scarves.. I'd love to see them.

If you don't know how to crochet or knit, Lion's Brand (I think it's Lion's Brand, it could be another one?) makes a kit to learn to do said project. I know they have one year-round that is for a breast cancer scarf where they donate a percentage of the sales toward research.

flutterbyfae In reply to fireylittleone [2006-10-23 14:09:07 +0000 UTC]

On the Lion Brand website, I found a pattern for such a scarf [link] but no kit (if the link doesn't work, I just searched for "breast cancer"). I'll have to look into the donations for research thing... it sounds great.
Thanks for the info

Beautiful. It's a very pretty design, and I hope she'll like it very much.

Yeeah.. Cancer's just horrible. My friend's mom was diagnosed with stomach cancer a couple of days ago. I'm planning on knitting/crocheting a scarf for her. But just in her favorite color, not necessarily of the awareness color. I have no idea what the color is for stomach cancer.

Great job.

I'm sorry to hear the news, though
Will you be posting the scarf? I'd love to see it.

btw: stomach cancer's awareness ribbon color is periwinkle. You can find a list on Wikipedia at [link]

Yeah.. I think I'll post it, but it'll be navy blue, 'cause that's her favorite color.

Thanks for the info, though! In the future I'll be able to make even more scarves of all the cancer awareness colors. Hehehe.. That'd be an interesting project.
