Further to my journal post - here is how I get so close to the original when using a reference. It’s called the grid technique. You place a grid over the original drawing and use that to help guide you.

This is how I will start, with the reference to one side on Procreate. It’s a really useful technique. I have learned so much from it and it forces you to really break down pictures, focusing on specific bits and understand how or what the artist has done. It also helps me break it down into sections and really study certain parts of anatomy.
