I can never understand why they didn't build the platforms higher so it would not be necessary to step up so high, bad for everyone, children, the old the infirm, mums with prams, handicapped in wheelchairs, surely that's not rocket science?

I think they're added in ramps for that. Plus it must of been used at stations with higher platforms.
