Description Rendering for my personal hot rod project.... hybrid of two great Chevrolet designs that look as though they SHOULD have been made as one: 1969 Camaro RS front clip, lower doors and rear quarters on a 1971 Nova.
I had drawn this up many times over the years, built scale models, and spent many sleepless nights obsessing over the right way to do it.... and now it's ON!
As always, Illustrator artwork created using original pencil roughs... background created using pen tool, scanned found objects for texture, and the amazing Troy White's Grifter set.
Look for coverage of the actual build on my site, and possibly a sneak peek at the rear end treatment.

Very nice work! I really love the color combo.

FYI: It's a vexel because you scanned in textures for the background. Check the "Vector Defined" section in the journal at *vectorlovers .

excellent work, well, what is diference of vexel and vector?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

flying-polock In reply to maciel [2007-04-30 13:38:01 +0000 UTC]

Admin had suggested that I place my work in Vexel art... I'm assuming because I tend to use shapes (drawn mostly with the pen tool and no brushes) to get the look of my work. Everything starts off as a pencil-on-paper rough, and gets scanned in, and essentially re-drawn in Illustrator (to keep a hand-frawn look, first and foremost -- but also to allow for drastic editing/changes later on.)

cityofthesouth In reply to flying-polock [2007-04-30 13:48:42 +0000 UTC]

still .... it's illustrator. can't BE vexel as far as i'm concerned. you happen to be my fav artist in the car world and it's an added bonus that we use the same software for me .... so when then they make you (i mean, suggest that you) put it under vexel, i just wanna bust some heads. it's ok though ... i know to look for you here now.

I understand, and I'm more thn willing to obey Admin... it is their house, after all, and I'm just happy to be here and share my work! I wonder if it's because I don't start with a photo that it doesn't fall under "vector"... either way, it's here, and I'm happy!
Thanks for the compliments, man! I've seen your stuff over on Lat-G (where it seems I never have time for), and dig your stuff, as well! Illustrator has been a blessing, as I'm going through some stuff with my hands that just wouldn't allow me to push my work on paper anymore... Greatest tool in my arsenal...

cityofthesouth In reply to flying-polock [2007-04-30 19:48:38 +0000 UTC]

yeah i hear ya ... they seem pretty cool around here anyway and it's a great place.
I wish there was a little more going on at lat-g cause i think for artists it HAS to be a great place to drum up business with all those car guys and magazine guys hanging around. Do you just do this freelance or do you have a second job type deal?

let me just say, if some of the guys where around who originally developed the camaro and saw this, they'd be kicking themselves for not thinking of it then ... especially when they were calling it the Panther huh? if you get it done, i seriously want to see pics. you can officially consider me a big fan ... you're the only artist to actually influence my work to any degree.

This is my full-time gig... how I feed three kids, a wife, and a dog! I went out on my own a year ago (after designing off-road stuff and web sites -- there's a hot combo!)
Thanks for the kind words, and glad that I have some influence, other than serving as a warning of what not to do... I'd like to pick your brain a bit, and witness your technique.
And yeah, the Panther name has been stuck on it since around High School, as a kind of tip-of-the-hat to the original Camaro concept (obviously!) It's gonna be a wild build, and after waiting 20+ years to do this, I'm just glad to have finally figured a lot of it out.

cityofthesouth In reply to flying-polock [2007-05-01 14:05:23 +0000 UTC]

it's getting serious. i'm going through shifts now since seeing your work and last night i started a pencil drawing just because of this conversation. i'd really like to be full time but i'm in the midwest (having trouble spreading the word), i feel like i'm coming into the game late, and i don't have previous "job" experience. I've been drawing with illustrator for almost 10 years which shocks me to even say but i've only been trying to make an income of it for maybe 4 ... it's all been guess work and i'm sure that doesn't really help but i'm bull headed. my way or the highway i guess.

anyway, this is going to be a tight car and no doubt PHR will be knocking at your door when they see it. you can pick my brain any time. my process for a long time ... let's just be honest ... is tracing, like most vector and vexel art. obviously i'm not ragging myself or other artists who do this but you can say your art originated in your head through your hands ya know. and it's true that my older drawings have taught me buckets just by really putting my pen tool on every detail of some fantastic hot rods but now ... i want to do my OWN ... my very OWN work. ref material will always be important but i feel like you deserve more credit with your art. plenty of people would disagree because it takes plenty of skill just to USE illustrator successfully but this is for me personally i guess. my custom charger was the first step but at the same time, your work is so unique that i hate to make anything even remotely close. then again (this is my brain at work ... constantly weighing both sides) i really don't like the way illustrator artists are going right now with mesh and 3D-like effects so i'm actually leaning toward a traditional style. i'm rambling and none of it's important.

I design them, and have been fortunate to have made friends with some very talented builders... my abilities in building are centered more on finish work, paint prep, and final paint finish (i.e. wet-sanding/polishing). I'm an amateur builder at best!

Better than me. All I can do is check ATF, oil, water, refill water, oil, washer fluid, wash & vaccuum the car. I've never even tried waxing.

That's something I never would've thought of, and it's an ingeinus combo... makes the already sexy long hood seem even longer.

Don't kill me for saying but it almost looks Javelin-esque now. ESQUE, mind you. Or being set farther back it has more of a Viper distribution to it.

Very nice... But if you had to cut up two cars to make it, I'd rather have the two

I've always been a fan of the AMC's, and I think that as we start building, you'll see some of that come through in the lower front valance... Good thing is, with reproduction sheetmetal, we're only cutting up one! I couldn't bear (or afford!) to slice and dice two.... Thanks for the time and comment!
