Description On 1/4/13, the Madison Area Herp Society took in a rescue in bad condition. He is severely dehydrated, thin from lack of food, both of his eyes are infected and filled with puss, and the infection has likely spread through his blood to other organs. We always try and help the reptiles out there in need, and this case is no different. However, it really brings up a point for me in how we care about these creatures. Reptiles are too often seen as a throw away pet, a creature who's life isn't worth much and if it passes away, it's no big deal. They are often an impulse buy for a child and end up neglected. This is not always the case, as you will find with our members, who take immaculate care of their beloved pets, but it does happen. This snake we rescued is a prime example of why we need to continue to get out and educate people about the proper care for their reptile pets. For anyone out there looking at getting a reptile for a pet, please do your research first. Talk to breeders, buy books, look online, don't just show up to a pet store and ask someone a few questions. You may find out that person telling you what you'll need, actually knows as little as you do. Also, realize that just like with any other animal, it may need veterinary care, and be able to afford to care for it properly and get it any attention it may need.

This Burm is currently being treated for sepsis. He should be double the size he is right now. We hope for a recovery.

Anyone that would like to donate to MAHS to help us spread education or to help with the vet bills for animals like this, please visit the link below, come to a meeting if you're a Madison local (hell, I've seen people from all over WI come out to talk with us!), or contact any of the board members. Thanks!

Poor dear. I recently took in a neglected Russian Tortoise ("Ivan") who was in a small tank with a normal light bulb, being fed almost exclusively grape tomatoes. He's now doing much better in a larger tank (just for the winter, as in the summer he will be moved to a larger out door enclosure) and being fed a proper, varying diet with calcium supplements and what-not. Once he's completely recovered I'll be contacting another herper buddy of mine to see if he'd be interested in keeping him. While I have a few tortoises of my own, I had not planned on adding another anytime soon, so I'll be on the look out for a decent home for him.

In addition, I took in an unwanted Ball Python about a year ago (now known as "Ziti", and she's happily reached her full size by now (a nice whopping 1.6 m) in a much larger enclosure, with the proper temperature and humidity. She went from a bad shed with constantly retained spectacles, mites and too small meals that were spaced too far apart, to a beloved pet who even her vet specialist praises as a very nice specimen indeed. She's my pride and joy.

I am slowly becoming the local reptile-dude. If I don't know what ails them, what kind of resources they need, or other tid-bits of info someone may be seeking... I have an awesome vet specialist who does. They get a lot of business through me.

I had no idea you guys were around! I live in Oshkosh. I've taken in several rescues myself it's always so sad to see what people will do to an animal. The last ones I took in were abandoned in a house that a family member of mine was renting out. The people had completely abandoned the house and there were 3 ball pythons left behind. They were there for nearly 2 months with no food, water, substrate or heat. I brought them home and had to treat them all for mites and respiratory infection. They recovered perfectly and they are now living in loving homes.

We are indeed! We even have forums if you want to talk to the whole of the MAHS group. We're always up for spreading educational awareness, as thats the only cure to these problems. That and self-enforcement of best-care practices, of course.

I'm glad to hear that you had success with your rescues! There is no better feeling than rehabbing an animal and joining it with a loving owner.

Poor baby, I couldn't give much but I donated $15. This makes me sick, I hope this little one gets back to being healthy. I wish I had the space for a burm, they are beautiful creatures.

Thank you so much!
We currently have this big guy on injections of Ceftazidime every other day. Hoping for a miracle. Its likely he will lose an eye if he pulls through. (If he makes it, we hope to make him into an education animal.)

He really would! Hes so laid back, even when hes sick and in pain. And hes one of the gentle giants with the bad rep. I want to show that these animals, while they have very specific needs, are wonderful pets in the long run if you know what you're getting into.

Poor baby I hope he makes it. Sickening how many people just toss away or neglect these animals.

Couldn't agree more. This poor guy doesn't deserve what has happened to him. Hes a saint, really. While at the vet, the Dr. did a culture of the pus in one eye (had to use a needle to open it up and drain it... relieve some pressure... win-win) and all Mr. Myanmar here did was hiss at the guy. I'd have done a lot more than that, for sure.

Aww I hate that people buy these beautiful babies, then just fuck around with their lives I used to own an exotic pet store, and the amount of people that came in weekly, wanting this or that...but no knowledge, no research, etc. They figured they are entitled to the animal because they had a credit card. Yeah, um...no.

Yep! I'm more along the lines of a casual keeper, but all of my animals are well-cared for. Biggest part of why I chose to become an Education Coordinator for my local herp society. My male boa was an adoption when he was very ill. He has scarring on his lungs, but is otherwise healthy now. Hoping this guy will turn around and become the newest, "My life was in jeopardy because of people buying on whim without prior knowledge."

We have big plans for him if he makes it, to say the least.

Aw, I sure hope he makes it! He's a stunner, and if his personality stays so calm and gentle, all the better

Lol, the idiots wanting to buy every herp out there is one of the big reasons we closed shop. Couldn't justify selling to anyone with money, but couldn't keep the shop open without it. So, we closed and kept most of the herps [adopted some out to local herpers].

Exactly my sentiment on the big guy-- hes an angel. Vocal, but never actually seems to want to bite.

Ugh. While I WANT every herp out there, I know that I couldn't provide the best home for all of them. lol My few are plenty for me, and I feel that I'm a bigger help to the herps by spreading the correct information about them and allowing people to meet my sweeties.

I bet he'll have one hell of a story once he's ready for a home

I agree. I wish I could help each and every animal out there, but it's not possible. I just had to rehome my beardies because we are moving, and there was no place for their giant tank. I could have downgraded [it was a 110G low, long and wide tank], but then they would have less room Sadly the people who took them decided that I was a horrible person [their condition still wasn't the best, in the year I had them, they had improved 10-fold]. Ah, such is life. We do what we can, educate as much as possible, and keep on keeping on
