Description Imagine a village in a magical world full of myths and legends and the almost required monsters and other mythical creatures. The houses and buildings vibrant and bright with colours, stacked and built one ontop of the other hugging the side of the hill, overlooking a sheer vertical cliff-side. With a second glance, one realises, "Wait a second.. This is no mythical world of fantasy! It's real!" Indeed, this is true. The title of this piece is Fia, F for fake (because the photograph has been edited beyond reality), and Ia is the name of this village on the island of Santorini in the Cyclades of Greece. Ria is the actual photograph.

With some changes to the original , mainly changes to the shadow's, this almost artistic, seemingly drawn interpretation arose. I think this worked well because of the photograph's subject itself. The stacked buildings are often seen drawn with very light and vibrant colours. The way the piece was cropped along with the shadow modifications, the photograph almost appears to have been drawn. With a blurred layer at 40% opacity added , the piece has a really warm and soft atmosphere to it and looks like many paintings I saw of the village of Ia while I was there.

The thumbnail never does a piece justice, and this is extremely true for this piece.

This is really gorgeous. I would never have believed anything like this existed in structure or relative colours if I hadn't have seen this and really looked at it.

Yes inded, the original subject is so colourful and doll-like that at first glance it's entirely possible to believe you drew it entirely! It's the typically Greek blue domes that were the telltale to me. This is lovely and I like how you posted both versions for comparison!

There are very few pictures that I look at and think, "This is an image of a world that already exists in my head... And now I need to write about both."

I'll link you if and when I finish the concept...

I think the original photo is quite awesome in itself, and this is a fascinating interpretation of it. I can hardly say which one I prefer. This is a manipulation that actually does add something worthwhile to the photograph, it really hooks your attention.

you must tell me how you did this

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

foukou In reply to death-jargin [2004-12-07 23:48:49 +0000 UTC]

Using photoshop CS i first altered the shadow/highlights of the photograph a bit. Image> Adjustments> Shadow/highlights. I didn't touch the highlightsbut set the shadow radius to 10, tonal width to 30% and amount to 70ish%. I then duplicated the layer to which i applied these shadow adjustments to, did a gaussian blur of about 6 px to the duplicateed layer, and set this layers opacity to about 30%... And this is how i did it.

I really like this. The original is excellent too, but I like the pastel tones of this version. It has a lighter, happier feel that appeals to me greatly. I love the way classic villages like this one are constructed. At first glance the buildings seem like a jumble, but as you look at the piece things begin to come together and take a form that's much more logical, not to mention fun to look at, than if they were lined up in nice neat rows. The village is so ancient, and each individual window has so much history, so many fascinating tales to tell. Each building is a work of art in itself, and viewed together as they are, arranged on the hill behind the church, makes for stimulating art, a rich historical cross section of a culture, a history lesson at a glance.

Wow, what a comment! Thank you very much for it! I'm glad you like this one more than the other... me too! I definately agree with what you are saying.. It's almost an overwhelming amount of history and stories.. It would be awesome to go to each window and ask people what their life stories are, and where they're from.. and so forth...
