Description
Short for "Miniaturized, Stupidly Overboard Chess Kludge, Enhanced and Tamed"..ZIP download includes a .ODT file and a .PDF file.
NOTES:
You can play this game using a regular chess set and a few checkers. For play-testing, I used the Pawns for Pikemen, a Rook for the Archer, a Knight for the Nightrider, one checker for the Marshall, an upside-down Rook for the Princess, a Bishop for the Squirrel, two stacked checkers for the Raven, the Queen as itself, and the King as itself.
CHANGES:
- Due to being horribly broken, the monstrously-powerful Amazon has been replaced with the run-of-the-mill Queen.
- Due to being almost unused during play-testing, the Teleportist has been replaced with the (hopefully more useful) Archer.
- To avoid breaking the game too much, Commoners have been replaced with the weaker Pikemen.
- The Princess and the Marshall have traded places to potentially allow more useful openings.
Same as normal chess, except that: 1) The King moves 2 squares towards the Raven to castle, followed by the Raven moving to the opposite side of the King, 2) There is no Queen's side castling, and 3) There is no en passant. Pikemen must be promoted to another piece if they reach the opposite side of the board. Note that the only piece that cannot be promoted to is a King.
PIECES:
*: Pikeman – Can either 1) Move/capture one square orthogonally forwards, 2) Move (without capturing) one square to the side, or 3) Capture one square diagonally forwards.
Ar: Archer – Can either 1) Move/capture one square orthogonally, or 2) Without moving, capture an enemy piece in the same file or rank by “shooting” it, as long as another piece isn't in its way.
N: Nightrider – Moves/captures in a (2, 1) jump (like a Knight), and can make its move repeatedly in the same direction. Cannot keep moving if it lands on a piece between Knight moves.
M: Marshall – Can either 1) Move/capture in a (2, 1) jump (like a Knight), or 2) Slide/capture by sliding in any number of squares orthogonally without jumping (like a Rook).
P: Princess – Can either 1) Move/capture in a (2, 1) jump (like a Knight), or 2) Slide/capture in any number of squares diagonally without jumping (like a Bishop).
Sq: Squirrel – Can move/capture by jumping either (2, 0), (2, 1) (like a Knight), or (2,2) squares.
Ra: Raven – Can either 1) Move like the Nightrider, or 2) Slide/capture in any number of squares orthogonally without jumping (like a Rook).
Q: Queen – Can either 1) Slide/capture in any number of squares diagonally without jumping, or 2) slide/capture in any number of squares orthogonally without jumping.
K: King – Can move/capture either by 1) Moving one square diagonally, or 2) Moving one square orthogonally.
