yes, it's minimalistic, and perfect for this piece (I don't recognize this one!) I do have to weed through my collection and sort out the junk ones.

oh fantastic it makes such a difference being able to render faster doesnt it dont forget blender 2.8 can use both CPU and GPU to render

yes, its very fast! however, the interface is totally different. For now, I start the project in 2.79 and then for final render, I reload it into 2.80
The only downside is that if you save in 2.8, it is not backwards compatible!Β

Are the "holes" actual holes in the object or UV mapped material which has transparency?? I am not very good with materials.
Tried to do similar things with CSG but that gets Blender/Sverchok easily to it's limits.
Any tips are appreciated.

oh yes they are mesh holes, it was done in my sw but easy to replicate in blender just a Torus with random selected faces then deleted and final object extruded with small bevel added.
then there about 3 of them i was just testing something out because if i scaled them they dont actually fit inside each other, with the Layers feature i just added to my software just this weekend finally got it working means i should be able to work on upto 9 different meshes at once, and it means i could then add another mesh inside the first and scale it before adding detail

Tried the selecting faces part but (in Sverchok) I am having difficulties to select non-overlapping rectangular areas by random.
Well hey - just playing around anyways - probably missing something obvious - will keep on playing.Β

yes i had a little try withΒ Sverchok but theres not many tuts my sw does it by going through every face of the object and according to some rules selects it i.e is any corner connected to another already selected face or if any edge is connected then dont select, on complicated objects like 22k faces it can take like 30 secs but its still faster than doing it by hand. Also the selecting happens before extruding it.
