Description
Attention, huge file (~3.5mb)Since I made some screenshots during painting my last deviation, I decided to make a tutorial out of this. I don't want to be megalomaniac, but when I started to draw this portrait, I nearly gave up and thought it would never be something that looked more or less good, not even to mention being finished someday.
But I kept on drawing and was quite happy with the result. So please take this as an inspiration next time you think you can't draw for your life. I hope the description on how I do things come in helpful for you, too.
The result can be found here: [link]
Since I'm not english, I bet there are some mistakes in it, but I hope everything is understandable.
Please tell me what you think of it and if you think I could change something to make it more helpful.
EDIT: What I forgot to mention: The straight-line-rule depends on the orientation of the face. In the picture I used, the head is nearly frontally seen. That means the line you would draw touching the chin runs parallel to the one in the eyes, which is here, incidentally parallel to the border of the picture. If the head is turned, the line that connects the eyes might be in a different angle, but it still has to be parallel to the line of the chin (and mouth in the relaxed position). However, more individual faces might vary, but it is a good orientation. Same goes for monsters (the more symmetrical ones, though), horns, ears, eyes should be on more or less parallel lines.

that's very great. It's nice to see that some don't use much layers. well here you used one at the face. It's more like painting to canvas
I'm actually that boring that I use multiple layers to back up my work ..

Thank you.
Well, my usage of layers totally depends on what I do - I recently drew some stuff that had really many layers in total, but it gives me a completely another "feeling", it feels more "combined". (Not to mention my computer getting horribly slow..)
I think the comparison to drawing on canvas gets it very well. When I drew the theoden, I really felt like "modelling" the face, like a sculpture or something...ah, now I want to draw something again..

Yes! I've got my tablet
I use it as my mouse, always. I tried a few times to airbrush some stuff in PS but it's jsut to hard for me I can't make a smooth 'gradient' by brushing and smudging. I guess I will have to practice a lot more

The straight line aligning the pupils is a new fact for me! Thanks!
It's quite amazing how this progresses, especially when you get to the finer details of it.
I have a question about Painter though, regarding layers. Can you treat layers as you do with PS? I.e. lock the lineart above all else and color beneath? The trial version didn't allow me to do this(if possible), thus, I was confined to a one-layer paint.

fraeuleinwunder In reply to TAHOpaints [2007-12-27 15:53:18 +0000 UTC]
I'm glad you could profit from this!
Painter allows multiple layers just like photoshop did, including all actions like setting the layer to different modes, lock transparency etc.

This is really cool and useful!
But I do have but one objection.
You are obviously an owner of a tablet. Have you ever tried drawing hair with a mouse?
*Im very sorry if you did indeed draw the entire thing with a mouse...In that case...ZOMG WHAT?????? You. Are. A. GOD!!!! *

I'm glad you found it useful!
You are right, this is drawn with a tablet. But before I got that I drew a lot with my mouse. ( [link]
for example, this is one of the first trials in digital art from my old account on which I only post photos anymore. As you can see it is much more smudgy and not clear since using a mouse makes the smudge tool seem a good decision.)
I agree that it is really hard to draw this way, but if you are determined to get a tablet, ebay should be fine. It must not be a high-priced one for the beginning - my first tablet was a 10β¬-one from ebay, but it worked.
A mouse means a lot more work since you can theoretically do everything you do with a tablet, too, but you have to adjust things like pressure, opacity etc manually..this takes ages, so I can fully understand your complain.

^^
...Mouse users must abuse the smudge tool with venom...
BUT... does everything with a mouse. So I'm rather determined to try.
..and thank you for putting up with me.

Well, she uses a lot of cg-ing and other techniques that are not as hard to achieve with a mouse as realism is (but I know some realistic painters who use mouses, too, they're so awesome for their patience..I wouldn't have some, am too lazy, which is why I trust in the mighty convenience of my tablet ). I wish you luck to achieve what you want!

There are some programs with more features for free on the internet, like gimp for example. You can get it here: [link]
It might not have all the features Photoshop provides, but at least it is a big improvement to MSpaint.
