Description Lorac, Draan(Goatman) Warrior

My current LARP character, played in the german Weltenbrand campaign.

While I made the design, most parts of it were done with the help of family or friends.
Weapons as well as armor were made entirely by good friends.
The mask was mady mostly by a good friend, while I only did minor tasks.
Although I didn't do most of the real work, I am most probably able to answer most questions about how most of the parts were made.

I just love this so much! Even more, I love satyrs.
It's completely beautiful and extremely well done, in my opinion. Love it.

how did you do the horns? they look great.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Fragrach In reply to Bandit81 [2010-06-13 21:27:13 +0000 UTC]

The horns are foam with leather reinforcements on the inside for stiffness and painted latex on the outside.

I'm strangely curious.. How were the hooves sculpted?
I've been trying to think of a good way to make hooves that wont get completely killed from hard surfaces... But most of the ways I can think of involve advanced tools.
Any suggestions?

Fragrach In reply to SalemLullai [2010-06-10 16:20:55 +0000 UTC]

Better than a suggestion, I have the tutorial, that I used to build my hooves . XD
Apart from a few basic tools, there is not much required.

[link]

These hooves have survived a lot of abuse the last 4 years of larp.
From marching about 20km through rocky paths to beeing dragged though mud for days.

If you plan to use the tutorial to build your own hooves, please inform me, because the tutorial is missing a few details, which greatly influence, how durable the product will be.

Wow~ Just gutter-plastic?
And it doesn't seem like it'd be too painful or expensive to make..
What details are missing, if you'd be kind enough to share?

Fragrach In reply to SalemLullai [2010-06-10 20:50:16 +0000 UTC]

Easy, isn't it?^^
It's quite easy to make, it just takes a little time because the layers need time to dry.
[link]
Here is the tutorial for the hooves.
What is missing:
-You can use any type of shoe/boot with a thick enough sole, which doesn't use laces.
-Use petrolatum on the plaster mould, to prevent the polyester resin from sticking to it.
-The glass fibre should look like this [link] , not like this [link] .

Oh dear.. fiberglass?
I always heard that was really toxic. ono;
And mold making seems to require a lot of space and time.
Hmm...
They look awesome though~

Fragrach In reply to SalemLullai [2010-06-10 22:12:42 +0000 UTC]

Fibreglas...not really toxic, just unhealthy, if you plan to inhale a lot of this stuff. Although since you just cut them in the right form(best done outside to reduce cleaning and possibility to inhale too much) and after that put it in the resin anyway, there is not too much time, to lead to any damage. Some kind of breathing protection might reduce the risk to zero.
Touching it directly is said to lead to an itchy effect, which can be avoided with gloves. Although I didn't experience that...
Mold making does not really require too much space and the time isn't really a critical factor either.
The question is, do you want a durable solution, which looks good and even has the right sound or not?^^

SalemLullai In reply to Fragrach [2010-06-10 22:22:35 +0000 UTC]

Good point...
I'll definitely put some thought into it. c:
The hooves I'm trying to make aren't really that difficult. In fact, the idea I was having was to just use clay and then stretch vinyl or leather over them...
The problem is that clay, no matter what type it is, can chip and break...
Perhaps I should look into using resin without the fiberglass. I don't plan to tromp around in the woods, after all.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Fragrach In reply to SalemLullai [2010-06-10 22:46:36 +0000 UTC]

Clay will break, especially, if it gets smashed on the ground a lot or crashes against the edges of stairs. XD
The fibre glas gets even more important on hard surfaces, like standard streets, concrete or rock. The ground in forests tends to be quite soft and forgiving. The minor damages, that I can see on my hooves, were mostly resulting from walks in towns on the way to conventions.
Without the fibre glas, the resin isn't really durable at all.

I see.. Thanks for the advice.
I'm just a bit hesitant to work with fiberglass seeing as the only place to work is on the patio of an apartment building.
That and I have no idea how much all of the clay/plaster/resin/fiberglass will cost..

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Fragrach In reply to SalemLullai [2010-06-10 23:39:59 +0000 UTC]

I mostly worked in the patio as well...only going to the garden shed, when it was to cold outside for the resin to dry.
At least here in germany, the parts are quite easy to get, since they are available in every home improvement market. They are normally used to repair certain damage to cars(from rust for example). It's just a few € here. Ebay may even be cheaper.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SalemLullai In reply to Fragrach [2010-06-10 23:43:30 +0000 UTC]

I saw a few people use bondo (it's also a car repair material) for hooves. I was thinking about that as well because it's more of a putty and is really hard to chip but can be sanded and painted.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Fragrach In reply to SalemLullai [2010-06-10 23:48:48 +0000 UTC]

A good friend used a similar material for her hooves, combined with the materials I used...it chipped a little, where other material was used.
Might be enough for just walking around without fighting, but I'm a bit unsure.

SalemLullai In reply to Fragrach [2010-06-11 01:30:15 +0000 UTC]

Apparently the 'toxic' part I've heard about is less about the fiberglass and more about the resin. The only resin I'm really familiar with is the two-part resin that cures into a clear 'glass-like' substance. I've used it outside and never had a problem.
Apparently more opaque resins can have worse fumes..

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Fragrach In reply to SalemLullai [2010-06-11 05:41:57 +0000 UTC]

Well, the resin is a bit toxic, but normally uncomplicated, if used outside.
The resin you're familiar with is exactly the one, that is needed.

Why guard knowledge, if there isn't any reason to do it?
I try to collect as much knowledge about building costumes as possible. If I hope to get some from others, how could I deny the same request, if presented to me?

SalemLullai In reply to Fragrach [2010-06-11 20:59:46 +0000 UTC]

That's what I think too!
But I guess some artists assume that later they'll make a profit off their techniques so they don't want someone else using them and stealing their profit... I'm not sure..

Fragrach In reply to SalemLullai [2010-06-13 21:24:27 +0000 UTC]

Maybe it's just beeing proud of what they have done and not wanting to spread theit techniques to either prevent such works fromn becoming too many or to prevent their technique from beeing used in the wrong way by an amateur.

SalemLullai In reply to Fragrach [2010-06-13 23:45:42 +0000 UTC]

It's more that one can start searching somewhere else for similar knowledge or start thinking about own solutions, instead of hoping the answer will come in 2,3...12 or even more Days. XD

Such is the way of business, art and the internet in general.
Anyway, I talked over the resin and fibreglass idea with a friend and he said that he could help me out with some of it. I wont be able to start for a few weeks though.
