The Prince of Puzzlers! The Count of Conundrums! Edward Nygma, otherwise known as The Riddler, played by comedy actor Jim Carrey. This version of the character is Bruce Wayne's enemy, because Bruce rejected him, and Edward becomes Bruce's enemy. After Tim Burton pass on the torch to his friend Joel Schumacher, helping out hiring Lee and Janet Scott Batchler to write the screenplay, and Tommy Lee Jones joined the project as Two-Face, Warner Bros. wanted a secondary villain for the film, and the Batchlers chose The Riddler as the secondary villain for the film.

Joel wanted Robin Williams to play The Riddler in Batman Forever, and even the Batchlers wrote The Riddler with his voice in mind. In the first two drafts written by the Batchlers, they gave Riddler the name of Lyle Heckendorf, not Edward Nygma. His company was not NygmaTech. His name was Lyle Heckendorf. So, the name of the company was HeckTech. Joel came up with a scene that was not in the final film where Lyle stalks Bruce Wayne and Chase Meridian at the circus, where they're about to see The Graysons die, and in order to get closer to Bruce, Lyle stole clothes from a fortune telling leprechaun, which form the basis of the Riddler outfit, and he has magenta hair.

Robin read the script and he loved it. Due to a salary dispute, the role went to Carrey. Carrey, like Tim Burton and Michelle Pfeiffer, is a fan of Batman 66 when he's a young boy. Jim Carrey originally wanted The Riddler with a question mark shaved into his head in the climax, but that didn't go through, because Carrey was going through a divorce court at the time, and he cannot show up in court with a question mark shaved into his head. He was to return as The Riddler in Batman Unchained as a hallucination in Batman's mind caused by The Scarecrow's fear toxin. When Batman & Robin caused a huge backlash like Batman Returns did, Warner Bros. reboot the franchise with the help from Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer with The Dark Knight Trilogy.
