Description
Here is the finished version of the Flght Deck illustration, COPIC colored. Asako does actually look surprisingly haunting floating back there behind Kimiko. It was a good experiment in trying for a more dynamically lit scene - not 100% successful, but going in the right direction. Starting to get better at adding density and color depth. The one thing in this drawing I really want to explore further is that Heads Up Display using customized Nixie tubes to put information in front of the pilot. An interestingly retro tech idea that I think I will try drawing more detail on sometime in the future.
The original art for this drawing is up in the MegaGear store here: www.megagear.com/6307_SP_Fligh…

The nixie tube hud would probably work better as a more obviously arranged array of vertical tubes. There are nixies that are designed to plug in vertically and display their character on the top. Probably the biggest tip though would be to make it more obvious they're arranged to be a dispay and not random wiring. (you might even try a combo of CRTs and nixies grouped together) The glass should aslo probably be at a higher angle.

Now you've got me thinking about a HUD that works like an old school, hand held, electronic game that uses a series of blinking LEDs to simulate moving dots.

The primitive HUD design is cool but I'm struggling to figure out how it would work. The bulbs don't appear to be in any kind of pattern to discern information. Perhaps smaller bulbs, and chambers surrounded by mirrors to focus the light more onto the glass panel, as the current design would leave you with a glowing panel which would just ruin visibility. I think it's an awesome idea in general though. I'd love to see it further developed.

I think sharper contrasts in the shadows and light would be more effective. If they're night-flying, all that light in the cockpit would drown out any visuals from outside with the glare. Really most of the cockpit would be black, with only the barest features of the crew would be made out from the glow of the instruments. (Nice use of the Nixie tube tho)
Of course, from an illustration stand-point, the only problem with that is you'd miss out all the glorious detail you put into the structure of the cockpit...I really like the cramped vibe.
A stellar image as always, and I'm really enjoying this mini-series of (steam-punk? Gas-punk? ) bomber crew art.

I am glad I run into your work. You really come a long way ever since you start megatokyo with your friend.

So if they can use nixie tubes, is their language kinda glyphic like Japanese (or more likely, the Predator language we saw in the original movie)?

On the thumbnail, I thought maybe I was looking at the Millennium Falcon cockpit.
Very well done!

I admit, it does look like the rest of my work. Been trying to look BETTER than the old comic work, but I seem to be stuck with the same general look and feel

I do wonder what fresh problem Yaku there has to report. I can only assume something broke down again.
