Hello Deviants. How's it going?
Just posting a journal because there isn't much else I'm going to be doing on DA until further notice. I've been doing nothing but traditional drawing lately and aside from the fact that my scanner sucks, I'd have to say I've been enjoying it. I'm trying to relax a bit when it comes to my art, taking everything in stride and remembering that it's all about practice, practice, practice. Not everything is going to be perfect and sometimes I'm going to have to just start over. Nothing to get frustrated about.
I've been mostly sketching and haven't really delved in to any refined work quite yet, but it has helped loosen up my hand and I'm liking the quality of a lot of my recent sketches.
In other news, I've decided to officially take a break from Dirty and come back to the project when I'm ready for it. There are a lot of pieces to the story that I'm still trying to fit together and even though I have what I believe to be a solid beginning, the vision I have for the project won't allow me to start it half-cocked. Let's just say, it's still in the oven.
In the meantime and in between time I'll be shifting my focus to a story I've had floating around in my head for a while now called, Mother of Misfortune. The plot to this is much more straight-forward and I've already started scripting the first chapter.
the plot:
Aziza, a young reclusive mother residing in the village of Red Crest with her infant son, Umi (optional name), is living an ordinary life until she is confronted by a group of men sent by the king. It is then revealed that she is Aziza, the Final Gale; a former member of King Arun's band of mercenary warlords called the Eight Arms of Ruin. After one of King Arun's sons is murdered under the watch of Aziza's replacement, he is banished and she is reluctantly called back in to battle. And then... stuff happens. dun dun dun.
The setting has kind of a Samurai Seven vibe minus all the samurai and giant mechas with the addition of more fantasy elements. I'm still working on the character concepts because at this point I only know what Aziza looks like. Also, I have to learn to draw armor or attain a God-like level of armor shorthand, because there is a lot of armor. Damn it. I just realized... there's A LOT of armor.
Well, that's it. Bye.
Wait. No it isn't. Tell me about your projects. I want to know every excruciating detail.

I'm glad you're working on your art! I was wondering when we hadn't heard from you in a while, I wondered how you were doing. Each story you work on will help you in the long run. I had to set mine side for a while too. But we'll get back to them!
I like your Mother of Misfortune idea!

Thanks! I'm pretty excited about the story's potential.
But yeah, since my switch to pencil and paper I haven't made anything submission worthy and the sketches I do like haven't been scanning very well.

Well, I hope someday we do get to see them. But enjoy making your art, first and foremost!

Hey buddy, although it's a shame you're putting Dirty on hold I completely understand how you feel. I'm forever holding off on ideas because I'm just not confident I can pull off the level of execution I can visualise yet. Despite that it may be a blessing, as I can feel your enthusiasm for this new project loud and clear.
Good to hear you're enjoying working traditionally, it's more important to be enjoying your art than showing I think. I'm sure removing the pressure to produce work that you're posting helps remove a lot of the roadblocks, certainly I sometimes feel the need to take a break from the whole cycle of social media and DA thing! Keep working hard dude!

Yeah. I feel like I've left my child on the side of a long road by taking a break from Dirty. But, I need to just not obsess with it for a while. I've grown too close to aspects of the story that need to be changed and Mother of Misfortune just feels fresh and malleable in my mind.
Traditional is cool, although I'm having trouble with inking as none of my sketchbooks are really good for it. And even without posting, social media is one big distraction (when I'm on Tumblr drooling at art I tell myself it's for learning purposes), but I'm working on it. But, I'll definitely keep working. You make sure to do the same!

Ah, the social media dilemma. Between twitter, tumblr and here I've a lifetime's worth of distraction! Still I'll keep on keeping on. I seem to gave found some confidence in what I'm doing lately, so I'm trying to take full advantage while it lasts!
I'm sure you'll come back to Dirty when you're good and ready. And if not, then what you've learned from it will make your next project even better.

It's too early to even consider the idea of never coming back to Dirty. The thought alone hurts my heart. haha
And definitely do not let that confidence go to waste.
