Description This photo was taken during my stay in India. The photo is of a follower of the Jain religion which is one of the oldest in the world. The followers practice renunciation which is why the man has no close on.

There is so much to explain about the Jain religion, I could practically write a book on in so instead if you want to read up more about what the Jain's believe in you can check it out here [link]

The is a fascinating and beautiful shot Vanessa. To see someone so devote to their religion is one of the most powerful images in existence and you captured this one very nicely. They are obviously a humble and unashamed people to be able to worship in such an intimate way. I have to admit that I don't know very much about this religion so I'll have to have a look at that link when I can.

Excellent work! Very well done indeed!

This is stunning. I don't know if I would have even felt comfortable taking the shot. I like the framing of the shot, but also the contrast between the luxurious feel of the peacock fan and the humble aspect of the nude man.

It was a tough decision to take the shot or not. To be honest I felt a bit guilty taking such a intimate photo. But the space was quite crowded so it wasn't like I was infringing on his space to worship. The feeling of solitude is only achieved because I did a lot of cropping.

I love the contrast of the fan and the man too. The fans are one of the few possessions the Jains own, they use them to brush off the ground before they sit and worship. Peacock feathers are used because Peacocks naturally loose their tail feathers so no harm comes to the animal when the feathers are used for fans.

You know, I knew that about peacocks (I used to try to collect the feathers at the little zoo near me!) but I never figured that was the reasoning behind the fan. I just think of them as being pretty, but it does make a lot of sense now. Always fun to learn something new

wow
interesting motive, you captured him perfect
also the colours and shading of the background and such is very nice, not to analyse the structure of this photo lol no but it makes it so quite and homogenic and peaceful somehow...
cool shot

The unclothed man in the midst of such immense pillars so close to each other really portrays a humbling experience.

Not to say that this is a bad picture, because it is a BEAUTIFUL capture, but when I saw this I thought "This is so personal!" You've captured such a personal photo it just feels like I am right there, watching him myself. So in depth with just a simple posture and the lack of shame in being nude. I say this is beautiful and in a way I'm glad you've got this photo but in a way I wish it wasn't here..just feels so indepth like I'm invading someone's space (I WASN'T EVEN THERE!!! XD) you've got this just grabbing me- thank you!

Thank you for such the indebted comment. I totally understand what you are saying here because I was feeling all those same emotions when I took the photo. I wanted a photo of him worshiping because it was such a spiritual experience to witness someone so divout to their faith worshiping like that. I wanted to capture that moment forever and be able to share it with others. At the same time I was very torn. I wasn't quite sure if I wanted to invade his worship and demean it some how by photographing it. So I compromised. I took a photo of the crowd around him (the photo posted is significantly cropped) that way I felt I was photographing a more public setting with a very intimate action occurring in it. I hope that all made some form of sense.
But thank you very much for the comment. I am so happy you got the meaning of the photo.
