I very recently played through Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door again. The final segment of the game takes place inside the actual titular door, and it has a whole lot of spikes that hurt you if you fall on them. BUT there are also lots of parts where falling leads to prizes. So after exiting a door, I had no way to tell if the floor below was spikey or not.
So I pushed my partner into the pit to test.

There were indeed spikes. >w<
