His earliest memory is of his swollen, pregnant mother Shelly plucking melodies to him on her acoustic guitar. His brother Adam was born shortly after that. She and her husband Warren’s relationship rapidly deteriorated after the birth of their second son. Kenny’s parents spent their time constantly arguing or in white knuckled silence. His mother became unhappy and submissive in an attempt to save her fragile marriage. Crushed under her husband’s thumb, Shelly became a shadow of the woman she once was. At the time Kenny was too young to understand the abusive nature of his parents’ union. He often questioned if he was to blame for their fighting.

His father also had an influential hold on his formative years. Warren often took his sons on joyrides around Northridge in his vintage truck so that he could dispense nuggets of wisdom to them. He especially put emphasis on what it meant to be a man. Warren believed that the worst crime the boys could commit against God and their family was to end up a couple of “fags”. The hypermasculinity enforced by his father only further helped Kenny to develop a deep-rooted self hatred as he struggled to meet the older man’s expectations.

In high school he became Northridge’s star quarterback 1998-2000. He craved popularity and worked hard to gain the status he felt was entitled to him. Kenny no longer cared to impress his father but instead contended with living up to his own perceived self image. He further dodged his insecurities by bullying the few people at Northridge High School that failed to outwardly meet his heteronormative standards. It was around this time that a proud Puerto Rican immigrant named Adelaide Elena Alvarez Feliciano transferred into the graduating class two years below Kenneth’s. She was bangin’ and it seemed like all the guys at school were vying for her affection. At first his own shallow attempts to win her over went about as well as the rest of them; Addy saw right through him as if he were made of glass. But much to everyone’s surprise the two eventually were able to find common ground and became inseparable best friends. In Kenneth’s senior year he asked her to prom and, after some consideration, she said yes.

After graduating from NRHS, he immediately moved out to attend WSUK. Being at his childhood home had become unbearable. He’d grown to loathe his father and there was very little he could do to ease his mother’s situation. The moment Shelly stepped out of line, her manipulative husband was there waiting. Their arguments had escalated since Kenneth’s childhood. Warren often threatened to kill her if she ever considered leaving him. She’d long since learned to drown her sorrows with spirits and barely got out of bed. In a naïve stroke of inspiration, Kenny went on to study law enforcement so that he could ‘save’ her. Shelly chose to stay with her husband despite her son’s best efforts. They stopped talking after that.

Things only got better for Kenny since he’s estranged himself from his parents. Adelaide moved in with him when she was ready. He waited until he had a secure position on the NRPD to propose to her. They got married and settled down in a mid-sized colonial style home in the ‘burbs. Kenneth has been on the force for ten years now and he’s been with Addy for longer than that.
