I've been working more with this method lately but run into trouble on step one and two with getting the correct envelope down and finding the relationships.
Is there any trick to getting the right angles/proportions or do I just have to keep practising for it to fall in place?

Count how many heads it is from the top of the head to the feet.
Then you know tall to make it. After that, draw the basic head shape
and build your angles from there. It's your best guess. As you suspect,
it gets more accurate the more you practice.
Keep your lines light and simple. That way if you make a mistake, you can erase
it. Keeping your shapes simple also allows for easier adjustment. Rather than moving
an arm, you just move a lines

Ah, now that you mention it I see exactly where you've measured the head lengths.
