It was actually like this when I shot the picture.
Light was coming in from the back and the side from behind the kitty, and I was using my super light sensitive lens which has a little less contrast than my others.

How to get good and unique pictures: use old manual lenses!
They're super cheap, and if you pick the right mount lens adapters come as cheap as 3 dollars from ebay.
Especially good are m42 (old pentax) prime lenses, Super takumar and the like.
