Description
This was a Hot Wheel I recently designed. It is called Scorcher and the design brief was to design a drift car for Hot Wheels. So this was the final design and you can buy it in the stores now. It even features my company logo (Future Elements) on the front fender. If you want to read more about it check out [link]Related content

I want to personally thank you for making the Scorcher. That car has been the single biggest influence on every single one of the cars I've drawn/designed, and will likely continue to influence them for ages to come. Thank you

HOLY FLIPPIN MOTHER OF CRABCAKE
I didn't have the slightest that you were the designer of this car! I have every color variation. It's actually one of my favorite "fantasy" cars along with Torque Twister, Bone Shaker and the MS-T Suzuka.
Did you ever render a picture of the rear of this car?

No I never did a rendering of the back but I do have sketches of it. This car was a very quick design so I did not have a lot of time to spend on it. Thanks for the kind words.

Not a prob, been a fan of your work for quite a while. Not a compulsive faver, but i find myself faving pretty much anything you upload. [link]
It'd be cool if you could upload the sketches you mentioned, even if you place them in your scrapbook, like I said I love the Scorcher's design.

holy shit thats awesome.. but like.. you didnt answer my question.
How could i become a full (or part time) designer for the hotwheels? Obviously i lack the skills to design real cars.. but concept cars where you can forget about practicality and material costs.. thats my thing!
It would be a dream come true to design cars for kids.. so please.. tell me some advice.. what kind of portfolio got you the job? what skills are essential? What kind of designers/people are they seeking for?
Ive tried to find their contact information on their site to ask all these same questions.. but with no luck finding them. So you could be my only chance to ask..

Well most of the guys that work at Hot Wheels were car designers. I even worked at Ford for a little bit and my schooling was transportation design. So it would be kind of hard to skip that step. They look for a blend between car designer and entertainment designer. You also have to be pretty quick at designing things. Great sketching and design skills are in your portfolio are a must. In a round about way I ended up meeting the director of Hot Wheels which in the long run it helped me get the job pretty quick. It is not easy to get in at all just because not many designers ever leave. I am one of the exceptions. Not sure if that helps but let me know if I can be of any other help.

damn.. thats really depressing to know all that..
But thank you very much for the valuable info anyways!
Maybe after my 3D viz studies and lots of practice in designing and modeling vehicles i'll have a bit more chances to get into some school or at least to some smaller courses..
What do you think. would a good looking portfolio and nice looking designs get me to ANY kind of toy car designer position? Im not sure, but i think that for example Harald Belker wasnt a car designer.. he was more of a concept artist and entertainment designer.. and he got to design his own hot wheels cars.

I know Harald very well. He was actually a designer for Mercedes at one time and he quite to do entertainment stuff. I actually worked with him on all his hot wheels cars while I was a designer there. You could possibly study product design as well to get in somewhere.I don't want it to sound depressing at all. I am just sayin you have to work really hard to get there. I can actually say that Hot Wheels paid better than the auto industry did at the time so it is not super easy to just walk in and get a job. You just have to get it in your mind that you will improve and be as good as those designers so you can get in there. I say go for it man don't let anything hold you back. The beauty about the internet is that you can get so much free info and advice now you head will burst. Shoot when I started out the internet was just starting and I didn't have all these resources to see. In the near future I am actually planning on teaching some online classes of my own. So just dig deep and don't be afraid to fail. Take care man and keep up the hard work.

Damn.. now thats more like it! You.. with Harald?? Wow.. i bet it was really cool to work alongside with him. Thank you for all these words. They mean quite much to me man.
I have set myself a goal for this summer break from school, that i would try my best to draw and speedpaint every day during the holidays.. hopefully i'll get at least a bit better by the time we go back to school.
What do you think.. is there any advantage for me if im studying 3D viz and animation? Or do the guys in hotwheels and similar companies look only at 2d renderings? I bet the designs are the key element but still.. do they think that its somehow better that you can show your design in full 3 dimensions rather than 2d sketches?
