Description Something that I did over at my sisters at night to keep me busy , and finnished it today not much imagination put into it just wanted to do a pic of a classic British Comic character , I always loved Brian Bollands version of Dredd so his drawings were the template for this , perhaps when I'm feeling like i've got no ideas i'll do some other characters I'm tempted to do a Johnny Red, Charley Bourne or a Nemesis the Warlock at some stage. P.S always liked the old school 1980s 2000ad logo more so than the other logos so thats why I added that in, felt most nostalgic when I started this pic

Aw man, this takes me back. Way back when, in the classic era of 2000ad. I stopped reading it a while back, something of a mixture of me getting older and the comic getting, well, shit.
Still, I love picking up the old comics ( some went on sale for a whopping 8p! ) when I visit my folks'. Dredd always rocked...

"Hey man, the Judges can arrest you for spitting."
"Shove it man, I like spitting."
Crack!
"Then spit teeth meathead."

2000AD was really great from about 1978 up till about 1992 ..which I guess is a very good run for a comic in my mind, it still has its moments from time to time(Judge Dredd Origins been a good Example although as a good solid comic I think its lost it , maybe its because the audience they go after are the same audience that read it in the 80's and 90's which is sad as primarly when it first came out it was aimed at kids and young teenagers (I imagine most fanbase now is in 20's and 30s .The complicated stories with show off very stylised art work kind of turn me of it a bit these days , I'd prefer good story telling with a dash of black humor which is what 2000ad artists and writers are masters of , but I think there in good hands now there owned by a computer games company called Rebellion if they have there heads screwed on they should use 2000ad characters in games(they have with Dredd and Rouge Trooper so far) which would attract new readers , if done well

Yep its iconic this is really Bollands work..i used to copy his pages when I was 13 or 14, him and Brett Ewins, Al Williamson and Walt Simonson(probably lots of others too) but Bollands always gonna be in my top 2 , I really feel like doing a wee Dredd strip sometime in future, maybe when I get a bit bored of my own creations

I really think I should do a few more 2000ad related things soon seeing as its a huge influence on my work , but i'll be busy with my own comic for a while, i'd like to do something along the lines of a character montage(but with the old logo as I prefer it )

I used Bollands original drawing to get the detail on face he's great at drawing peoples "Boat Races" and I looked at a pic of Clint Eastwood dipped into that to get flesh colours and tones , always felt that Dredd was more like Clint than the awful Stallone (who played him for about 10 minuites in the movie then discarded the bucket on his head and the character and it was no longer a Dredd movie )avoid that film but have a look out for the comics (the original British stuff but not the D.C version)

Wonder how many Dredds killed over the years it must go into the millions (he destroyed half of Russia in one issue back in the early 80s)

I think you should do some Canadian superheroes myself , like Wolverine or Alpha Flight,Guardian (or Captain Canuack as he was known in the seventies would be a great character for you to draw , judging by your superhero pieces)

Blame Brian Bolland for that. Like I said before I used one of his images and painted over it , he does the best Dredd wanted to capture at least some of his style and mix it with mine(plus I was feeling knackered all last week as those boys wear you out

I Guess Im gonna have to go by myself something I'd rather not do, but my friend Leon who was going to go, father died a few weeks ago and I very much doubt he's going be in the mood for it whilst my other mate Dave is off to Turkey that weekend , Spaceplant who lives up North cant go either,I could ask my friend Marina who's a teacher but I'm sure she's snowed under with work as ever. I know barely anyone in my shitty hometown its Chav centeral so i guess i'm on my Jack Jones I really should go as its a oppotunity to meet some heros of mine and promote my own comic ..but I'd rather enjoy it rather than worry about it

Nobody has normal teeth even Americans and there teeth whitening products I like to add the odd filling in now and again just to show characters are human

necrophelia In reply to FuzzChile [2005-11-12 00:28:35 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, maybe normal wasn't the right word. I don't like perfect teeth. I like teeth to be a little uneven and some look sharper than others and all that. It does really build character. I like jagged teeth a lot.

FuzzChile In reply to spaceplant [2005-11-09 12:42:15 +0000 UTC]

His style changed by the time he got to Slaine , very unusual always rated his stuff as you could see artistic development going on the same applys with O'Neil. one thing that bores me about American style comic art and Manga is the style is fixed forever the artist just sticks to that one style McMahon O'Neil McCarthy and Ewins constantly developed there styles which was always fascinating to see

spaceplant In reply to FuzzChile [2005-11-09 14:43:00 +0000 UTC]

The manga style has changed a bit, but you'd only spot it over a period of 10 years or so. Mainly hair styles and clothes. Compare Battle of the Planets to stuff now

FuzzChile In reply to spaceplant [2005-11-11 15:23:43 +0000 UTC]

Its something thats very uniform .. but saying that I own a big phone directory sized Manga and there is much variety in the content of it but its the fan art that you see everywhere that gives off a impression that not much changes , i dont see what big fuss about it is really It strikes me as been more femine as opposed to my way of drawing i like drawing big noses , stubble and expressions , wish there was a term for european comic art that sounded trendy and new

He's the reincarnation of Dirty Harry, that was John Wagners (The guy who scripts Dredd's original conception of him in fact he used to script a story back in the 70s called One Eyed Jack which was basically Dirty Harry with one Eye missing mind you Dredd in his early adventures he was quite nobel and helped the little guy ) as years progress he's become more of a oppressive figure guess thats what makes him a interesting character as he can be seen as villian and hero at the same time:rc:
