Mek-Lin Pulse Disintegration Pistol.

"It's a Mek!"

Meks, Meeks, even Mik. Mek-Lin is short for Mek'mincta Linikin-chi*. It's the name of the Vierin' designer who came up with the concept. That concept is over a million and half solar years old. So, rather than this being a new rehash of M-4/AK/Ruger/ Glock or whatever with some fancy name occasionally covered with counter intuitive Tacticool gear, this is old. In the world of Casey Gage, where pulse weapons are future tech for Terra, it's new tech. Despite its age, it has been stored in its presentation case and was never fired. The Verilyum has a nice olive patina to it, and the last thing you'd want to do is clean it!

This particular weapon was made in a Ma-aroo facility in 382 AD. On Terra, Emperor Theodosius was signing a treaty with the Visigoths.

Everything is simple, rugged, and easily taken apart with one five-point tool bit. The lower and upper are a machined piece of heat treated Verilyum, and the upper contains the barrel and focusing diode.

Power is a storage device, it's a large sealed metallic capacitor that can be charged in a solar hour or less by a charge pack with a minimum 150-volt input. Most quorum ships have this voltage available, and Casey was able to power tap off his fusion devices and get the same voltage. Thus, it is wise to have spare packs and the holsters have for such a device.

Not to worry though, a fully charged pack slips nicely into the handle and delivers four hundred full charge pulses as fast as one can one can squeeze the trigger. On stun, six hundred and fifty pulses can be fired. A single stun pulse will easily drop a 300 plus pound Torgan. T'rrl love these pistols and the shorter barreled versions are standard issue.

The safety, while not ambidextrous, has two settings, safe (the weapon is in safe mode now) that blocks the trigger. Thumbing the lever forward clicks the weapon into full power and one more detent puts the weapon in stun mode. The last notch allows the operator to remove the lower once the disassembly screw is removed. (see diagram) Counter shows how many full power shots are available.

If there is one minor disadvantage to the weapon, it's that there is no release to quickly drop the power cap. However, rotating the safety back to the last notch releases the cap so it can be pulled from the lower. It is a tight fit and the small amount of heat generated from shooting requires a robust pull to extract. Perhaps the ancients figured several personel with 400 shots each should have killed their foes with careful aiming!

Unlike Peacekeeper pulse pistols, which cannot pierce a Scarran's thick leathery hide, a Mek pulse will do fatal damage. Perhaps this is why the Vierin' have never developed a pulse rifle, although they have heavy thermal beamers and lasers. The Vierin' never engaged Scarrans, but Skivv are just as tough.

The Mek also has adjustable grips which slip up and snap in place on the lower. Despite the lack or checkering or rubber hand grips, recoil is negligible and controlling the weapon is easy with minimal practice.

Realizing he might have a problem with finding gun powder-based ammunition, Casey Cage starts searching for a particular type of longer barreled Mek. As fate or fortune would have it, he finds four with the four hundred round power caps. They are the longer barrel versions which are known for their accuracy and lower pulse dispersion. He "horse trades" for all four, plus extra packs and chargers.

It should be noted that Meks are being made for Terra under license by both Ruger and Glock, but they are the shorter barrel. The vertical lines show the length of the shorter barreled version. Ensign Forea carries the short-barreled version in the story Planet M12748.

Casey, and eventually Jool, will weld their Meks with deadly efficiency in the future. Casey will carry two, like Kimbal Kinnison*, a literary hero of his.
