Description X-Com is not kind. Rookies are sort of like those throwaway melee units you have in RTS games. UFO Defense has a massive fatality rate, in that you WILL lose almost every unit after every engagement, unless by random chance or total technological superiority (or by reloading the game) you wipe out all alien forces before everyone dies. Unfortunately, raw recruits have horrible aim. Give them a bad weapon and it becomes even worse. Give them a low-tech explosive weapon and you can kiss the rest of your men goodbye.

...I've only played Enemy Unknown and the rookies aren't THAT bad, but I've heard rumours about the original X-Com games and what a bunch of RAGE generators they can be.

All that aside, this is some funny shit. Not bad, dude.

The regular squaddies strap rookies to the bottom of the interceptor.

Nah, Ufo Defense wasn't that difficult, I finish most missions with minimum casualties. (I've played this game for the past 12 years though.) It's mostly harmless in comparison to X-Com: Terror from the Deep, which is just plain NASTY.

Oh, and the pic is faved.

BWHAHAHA!

Ahh, that's awesome, dude! Such a pain trying to keep your soldiers alive amid an alien invasion when they seem to have tapioca for brains and severe astygmatism.

Hm. You know, you could do a TFTD version, too. For maximum trauma.

"The omigawd an A-LI-EN" expression, almost caused me to suffocate from laughing too much I couldn't breathe.

One of my favorite to draw. I used this as a chance to try out expressions.

Third one is the Rookie version of the excited-Link reaction image that floats around 4chan. I love that little guy.

In terms of favourite expressions, the "Curse words!!" Fuklaw image had me absolutely in stitches (probably for longer than it should have)

Probably because you weren't expecting it within context of the character.

Mr-Culexus In reply to Gannadene [2009-02-26 06:34:21 +0000 UTC]

It may have been contextual. You posted it right after "John fuklaws letter home" as a gift for those who didnt want things to be too serious.

The expression is in of itself funny.

i lol'd
i still play this old game, and am constantly purchasing new soldiers and selling the rooks that just have terrible stats... the worst part is that you can't find out whether a rook has high mental defense until after a month of hiring them, and chances are the first few rooks that you have that level up end up having the WORST of Mental Defenses...

thanks for the comic

Love this.
really aught to try and dig out x-com again one day rather than sit here wishing hard for a remake.
Well, I say remake, just the same game with prettier graphics would be fine.
