With the advent of Windows 10, Microsoft is moving in the direction of creating a universal ("Responsive") OS for PC, tablet, and phone devices, and has moved Windows to run across these devices with no changes needed to the underlying code. However, even in the latest builds, there are many elements on the classic desktop that have yet to receive a modern and responsive makeover, which causes them to stick out like a sore thumb. File Explorer is one of those elements. Having been snowed in, I brewed a pot of coffee, and got to work designing mockup of what a modern replacement might look like, using elements already located in Windows 10, namely the new Photos app served as the template, and the smaller elements were grabbed from a beta File Explorer built into the Windows Phone 10 preview. I grouped the elements together in the layout File Explorer on Windows 8.1. I left the Ribbon controls largely unfinished, as by the time I completed the concept it was all but midnight. I may go back later and try to add more.

Windows File Explorer is a pretty powerful app, and with this new responsive design, users on smartphones and tablets would have more control over their data, while retaining the same layout as previous versions of Windows, mitigating the learning curve.
