Description
N I G H T S H I F TThis is the 4th piece of a series I decided to dedicate to a certain group of people who are characteristic of the Ruhrgebiet (Germany) - I am talking about shopmen who run a so called "Kiosk", "Bude" or "Trinkhalle".
These places are far more than just a newspaper kiosk; it is more a solid root of social life, as the neighbourhood meets there.
Those places do not have a sophisticated interior decoration - none of them. But they are all different. You can feel this difference in the first moment you enter such a place comparing it to the one you have visited before.
The difference makes the person behind the counter - itΒ΄s this personΒ΄s personaltiy turning this shop in to a very special place; it is actually no wonder as some of those shops have a direct connection to the flat of the shopowner. They have a hard job, opening at 5:00 am and closing sometimes at 1:00 am, running their tough business 7 days a week.
comments, favs and certainly critiques are more than just welcome!
have a great week,
chris.
try also:
edit: I did some changes to the crop - I hope you still like it.
The persons behind the counter have been removed aswell; I think this version is more ballanced.

Josh, thank you very much for this detailed critique; it is really interesting to hear about the story this picture is creating in your mind!

Just an amazing composition of light, color, objects, a brilliant red head. A very interesting
shop, lots to see, no rhyme or reason to the decor...just fun everywhere you look. The stag head on the
wall is a real treat.

I like the very strict framing a lot. This shot has a very strong impact thanks to it and to the colours involved in it.
The multiple frames in that image is striking, first the image frame, then the front and then several frames in the shop, it reminds me so much about a sequence in Divine intervention.
Well the colours mixing between red and yellow, and seeming to "correspond" and answer to each other. The lamps look like the break points to a silent conversation that shopkeeper is having at the time.
In a few words, congratulations Chris and thanks a lot for sharing such good works

what an amazing series! I like the feeling that I get when I look at this image... everything that I could possible want is inside this store, but only if you have the $$....yet, money is not what can buy companionship, which is what this image is lacking....

Bring back the people behind the counter. I thought, from your original artist's statement, they were a core component of the series. Also essentially makes my Critique sound as if it were written by a lunatic seeing invisible people and stories in other people's pictures! haha

There's something about the balloons that make everything more lonely, while the stocking'd legs tell a story all by themselves.
I'm curious about what the owner looked like, I missed that version.

I liked the previous version with the shopkeepers inside. The whole point of the kiosk is the social life taking place inside. Perhaps you can put up both versions? Just my two cents.

I love this series of Kiosks, each person a universe, a way of life, a social environment, a soul behind a face

This version appears to be more balanced, but I rather liked the characters from the first one. I don't know how to explain it except to say that they were part of the story - added to the life/history of the shop? Also, I really liked the contrast between the colorful/festive decor and the blasΓ© shop owner.

I enjoy watching this series unfold. It is so fun to see the differences in the arrangement of the wares they have for sale. For instance this shop and the one in Living Room have a very artistic flair, versus the others which to me just look orderly. I am sure you are taking the opportunity to speak with these shop owners. What an interesting journey this project must be.
This image is my favorite from the series mainly due to the feel I get when I look at the shop. This is a place that I would be pulled into. I like it's energy. Another beautiful image and I look forward to the continuation of this series.

Beide, eigentlich...
om.

i love this one  all the red is sooo fantastic and the yellows and intense whites of the three lights balance it out to keep enough "light" in it - its very busy yet well composed so it flows still
awesome one!
