The way we perceive our environment shapes us, photography has become more and more a medium of snapshots and a visual journal in the digital age. Standing out in the mass of imagery can be achieved in many ways, IΒ΄d like to point some of them out in this particular example. What strikes at the first glance is the format, a square format is the most difficult for photography because one cannot easily work with the 2/3 rule - you have to work with structure, shape and contrasts to bring tension into a 6x6. Chris managed to use the golden ratio to bring the tension into his composition. This alone shows that some thoughts went into the photograph. The square dots on the ceiling are a fine extension of the line that leads the viewer into this concrete world - which used to be a place of tragedy once upon a time. At the first glance the illuminated signs on the right seem out of place but at a second look they carry the whole composition and in an abstract way they enable the viewer to see a triangle, which perspectively is placed by the rule of the golden ratio too. The absence of life in this piece makes it clear that the theme, title and this angle, along with the artifical lighting is necessary to communicate these aspects of silence. To tell a story. To make a statement.

Your critique really lifted out the essence of a great image. The golden ratio comment is spot on.

How refreshing to see a fellow artist take the time and consideration to provide such a thoughtful, articulate critique! I would love to see more critiques in this vain provided by fellow deviants. Brilliant piece, well deserving of this complimentary, well thought out critique! Bravo to both the artist and the critic!

Thanks, its indeed rare to find the time to do so. And we actually canΒ΄t blame anyone for that fact due to our daily busy schedules.
