Chapter 4
Moving painfully fast, she twisted her head to see another person, the sun glaring from behind him, blocking out his features completely, leaving nothing but a dark silhouette. His hand was raised as he called out again, his warning screeching into her ears.
A dark shape slammed into his hand before whirling back out again, slicing into the second corpse, its body crashing to the ground, its oily blood slicking the ground. The brown-haired girl stared ahead in a daze, her hands shaking by her sides as her gaze once again fell on the motionless body of Blue-eyes, a scarlet stain gradually seeping into her hair, eyes still wide open with terror. Nausea rose up inside of her, and she raised a hand, clamping it over her mouth to force back a sob, staring towards the ground, tears gathering at the corners of her eyes and sliding down her face, her entire body shaking, numb with fear.
“Did you hear me?” Footsteps pounded on the solid earth as the shadowed person ran closer, raising his hand and flicking his wrist outwards, a small, bladed object whipping from a disc attached to a handle that was clasped in his hand, the final corpse slamming to the ground, a ragged hole torn in its chest, his hand reaching out to catch the bladed object as it slammed back onto the disc. Glancing up, all she saw was a flash of piercing orange eyes and russet hair before the person lunged down and heaved her to her feet, hooking his arm around her waist and dragging her upright.
“Why didn’t you run when I told you to?” the person demanded, his voice clearly trying to mask his anger as he tried to get the girl to stand on her feet. Entire body shaking, she raised her hand and pointed ahead to where Blue-eyes lay in a splash of her own blood, her limp form splayed out on her side, dull gaze fixed directly on the spot where the other girl once crouched.
“Shit…” The person hissed under his breath at the sight of Blue-eyes’ body, before he turned back towards the girl with the brown hair. Staring upwards, her gaze swam in and out of focus, unable to fix on any particular point, a proper grip on the world evading her.
“Hey, you! Look over there, you see her? If you don’t run soon, you’re going to end up just like her. It’s not fair- I know that, but we need to get out! Run!” With those words, the person let go of her and let her fall to the ground, shock at his words striking motion back into her, jolting her back to consciousness in time for her to brace out with her arms and land in a crouch.
Staggering back to her feet, she saw another group of corpses stagger into view, a sense of life inspired by fear springing to her as she saw them, adrenaline that almost overrode pain pulsing through her as her gaze snapped onto the person who stood beside her, his weapon raised. unnatural amber eyes, sliced through with slit-like pupils were trained straight ahead, his russet hair like feathers upon his head, a simple waistcoat-like jacket and black shoes worn over what appeared to be the box uniform as he flashed her a grin.
“That’s more like it. Come on!” Snatching onto her hand, he whirled around and broke into a run, dragging her behind him. Bare feet slamming into the rocky ground, she stumbled at first, but began to run alongside the boy, pulling her hand away and sweeping her hair out of her eyes, heart fluttering in her chest as she dared glance over her shoulder to where Blue-eyes once lay, but the only thing left of the girl was a pool of scarlet, seeping slowly into the earth, the body completely gone. Choking down a sob, she snapped her gaze around to look back ahead, whispering as she ran.
“I’m so sorry…”
“Keep going! We rendezvous with the rest of the group on row six!” Focusing her gaze ahead, she tried to block out the desperate gaze of Blue-eyes, and almost stumbled as the boy swung around a corner, seeming to know exactly the direction he needed to run in. Swerving violently now, weaving between row after row of endless white walls, silence descended on the two as they ran past the boxes, turning around corners sharply until the boy called out, and her eyes settled on another group of people. There were five of them, also running, three in box uniform, two in similar clothes to the boy as they skidded to a halt between the boxes, breathing heavily.
“I got another one.” the russet-haired boy gestured to the girl with the brown hair. “There was one more, but the Cybers got her before I did.” A girl with long, wispy grey hair tied up in a red bow flinched visibly, clenching her fists.
“Damn it. There’s always one…” casting her gaze to the side, the girl with grey hair wrapped her arms around herself, shuddering visibly.
“Do we leave, Robin?” The second person addressed the boy with russet hair, his blonde hair swept back and pinned behind his head in a short ponytail, sky-blue gaze reminding the brown-haired girl painfully of Blue-eyes, another shudder shaking her body. Nodding, ‘Robin’ glanced over to the side, attempting to regain his bearings, then turned back to the front, pointing out to his right.
“Yeah. The fence is just that way.” Suddenly, a screeching sound exploded right next to the girl with the grey hair, and she screamed as another corpse, a Cyber, Robin had called it, flung out from behind the box, a metallic screech emanating from its jaws as it lunged towards the girl. Darting to the side, seeming to overcome her initial terror, she raised her hands and forced outwards, a column of flame consuming the creature, sending it tumbling to the ground, the side of its face melted and charred, oily blood oozing out. The boy with the blonde hair looked as if he was about to say something, but was cut off by Fire-girl, who regarded him with an expression of disgust.
“Does this look like a time for your shitty puns, Caspi?” The boy with the ponytail, ‘Caspi’, shrugged, and looked as if he was going to respond, but was cut off as another Cyber began to lumber through the gap between the two people, who looked about to descend into a full argument.
“Move!” Robin called out, and Fire-girl threw herself out of the way as the russet-haired boy raised the disc, the sunlight catching on the small object, four blades protruding from it as it began to whirl around on its mount, then with a flick of his wrist, he sent it flying towards the Cyber. The rotating blades carving through its flesh, the robotized corpse fell to the ground, and Robin raised his hand to catch the bladed weapon on the disc, turning to face the brown-haired girl and the other five, a fierce intent lighting flames in his eyes.
“We leave. Now.”
They all turned, and they all ran.
As she swerved past rows of boxes, the girl with the brown hair felt an extreme fatigue settle on her limbs, her body seeming to crumble, the rocks slicing into the soles of her feet, the boxes flashing past, in what looked like never-ending numbers. Beginning to stumble, she watched in dismay as the gap between her and the rest of the group grew wider and wider, Robin forging far ahead, followed by the girl with the grey hair and the boy with the ponytail, then by the people from the boxes. Suddenly, one of the latter group, a girl with dark skin and hair, pulled away from the group and fell back to run alongside her, eyes wide with wonder, their green shade almost unnatural, hair exploding in a wide, curled halo around her head.
“This is amazing, isn’t it?” Glancing over in confusion at the other girl’s optimism, she shook her head lightly.
“Not really. We’ve got no idea what’s going on- for all we know, they could kill us.” The girl with green eyes laughed slightly, then hooked out her arm, wrapping it around the other girl’s wrist before running faster, her feet seeming unharmed by the harsh texture of the ground as she dragged the slower female behind her, attempting to help her catch up. Wobbling on her feet and almost toppling over, she let out a small exclamation, then braced herself against the girl with the dark hair, running at an odd angle, however she was glad for the help as she found herself catching up with the rest of the group, still being pulled by the taller and evidently stronger girl beside her.
“No need to be so down about things! Good stuff happens too, you know!” With that, she grinned widely, raising her hand in an odd kind of salute gesture that evidently served as a greeting. “I’m guessing you don’t have a name either, but I use geokinesis. I can control the earth around me. What’s your power?” Trying to scramble into a more upright position, the shorter girl attempted to shrug from where she was being pulled.
“I guess I can control lightning?” Eyes growing even more wide, Earth-girl let out a loud exclamation.
“That’s so cool!”
“Quiet! Do you want the Cybers to hear us?!” Ducking her head sheepishly as Robin’s scathing comment sailed back to meet her, Earth-girl flashed an excited grin once more, before continuing to run, her grip on the other girl’s wrist tightening. The gap between them and the group closed to nothing, and she let out a shaking breath before twisting her wrist free, and smiling lightly at Earth-Girl, feeling that she’d be able to make it to the fence on her own, the help giving her a chance to recover her energy.
“Thanks…” She spoke breathlessly, and the other female grinned once more in response, seeming to be permanently happy, a perpetual smile decorating her face. Letting her gaze fall on the other members of the group, she took in the sight of the two others, who had evidently also just escaped from the boxes, based on the scared and confused expressions on their faces. There were two boys, one with long limbs and short ginger hair, and another one that was slightly shorter, with a worried gaze and sand-coloured hair. Twisting back to face the front, desperate not to stumble again, she forced the pain in her feet to the back of her mind, and ran.
“Robin, We’ve got a tail!” Earth-girl called out from beside her, and the evident leader of the group twisted his head, the others doing the same, to catch sight of three Cybers, claws raised, eyes whirring, racing after them, sight trained on Robin.
“Keep going! It’s not far- don’t look back, and just run!” Heeding the older boy’s orders, the brown haired girl watched the ground, trying to forget the imminent danger that was chasing them down, pushing the thought of the wicked claws tearing into her flesh out of her mind, and running like her life depended on it.
Because it most likely did.
The whirring pushed closer.
Heart Racing.
Run. Run. Run.
Run and don’t look back.
Run and-
It rose from the ground before them. A huge mesh of metal pillars and chains, topped with red lights that pulsed mesmerizingly, far taller than any of the boxes, stretching out for as far as the eye could see on every direction, hurtling straight towards them, the Cybers seeming intent on pushing them into it.
She let her gaze flicker to the side as Robin veered off to the left, running alongside the fence and opening his mouth to speak, but was cut off as the boy with ginger hair latched onto the metal with claw-like fingers, as if to climb.
He never made it off the ground.
A screech rose to his jaws as a wave of energy shuddered through him, sending him flying backwards, eyes wide and pupils contracted, hands scorched to the bone, blood splattering the ground as his head smashed against the edge of one of the boxes, and the white was stained scarlet by the body that lay at its base.
“Damnit! Don’t touch the fence!” Robin’s command rang through the air, and fear jolted through the girl with the brown hair.
He’s dead…
Casting a final glance to where the Cybers had clustered around the ginger-haired boy’s corpse, she swallowed heavily, tears pricking at the corners of her eyes at the harsh realization of the danger she was in hit her again and again, breathlessness gripping at her chest as she continued to run, the fence flickering in her peripheral vision. Its deadly humming was now apparent to her, the buzz of electricity that shuddered through it echoing in her ears, forewarning her of the danger. Fixing her gaze straight ahead, she pulled in beside Earth-girl, the girl’s dark hair swinging behind her as she ran, her eyes wide and scared, smile completely gone from her face, gaze constantly shifting to settle on the fence, then back to the front.
“Here! Pull in here!” Skidding to a halt, the brown-haired girl drew in a shaking breath, poised to shout out a warning as Robin reached out and clasped directly onto the fence; however no vicious bolt of energy tore at him, as he slowly peeled back the edge of the chainlink, the grey-haired female ducking through the newly formed gap, her companion with the clipped back hair doing the same, before Robin motioned to a section of metal, just above the tear, where a small device, blinking softly, had been placed, barely larger than a thumbnail, hugging the fence tightly.
“It scrambles the electronic signals, meaning that we can use this section of the fence as an escape. It’s too small to be detected easily- we’ve been using the same exit for years now. Come on.” stepping forwards, the only remaining boy from the rescued group ducked through the gap, followed by Earth-girl, who regarded the device with wide-eyed curiosity, then, finally, the last, closing her eyes tight as she stepped through the gap, the metal grazing her hair its faint hum whirring above her, as she cleared the fence and escaped for good.
