His name Is Light.
The reason the mistake Raito is made is because that is the closest parallel to what it sounds like in english. Light is a direct translation to english. It's demonstrated in the movie, when Misa makes the mistake "lite", as well as spelled out in both the manga and anime series, both by spelling out the kanji used to create the name and by another means i cannot currently recall.
