sadly, no. i only own one horse (Ozzy). however, i am lucky enough to work at a standardbred breeding farm, so i spend lots and lots of time around the babies.

and yes. that's called a freezebrand. all racehorses are either freezebranded (like these kids) or tattooed (on their lips). this prevents cheating, and is also very helpful in the case of a theft. freezebranding uses a cold iron, rather than a hot one like traditional brand. as a result, there is no open wound/burn, and there is no way it can get infected. the healing process is quick, and the hair grows back white for the rest of the horse's life.

Thank you for that! Very interesting. I had heard of freezebranding, but never seen it - valuble information. I never have liked hot iron branding, simply because it's so harsh.

Amazing. I'll have to research that, because I would love to use that as an alternative to hot iron/no branding. Seems like it took longer than hot iron, but didn't faze the horse in the least. Thank you for sharing that. ^^

actually, the neck is standard for freezebranding. it's not as sensitive as other areas of the body, and it doesn't have any tack that goes over it. additionally, they are branded on the right side, and their manes are supposed to lie to the right, so when they get older, you can't see the freezebrand unless you look for it.

haha. i actually DIDN'T come up with that name. the only rule we have regarding naming them is that we use the first letter of mom's name. in this case, mom's name is Ella Minnow Pea (get it?) technically, Excess Energy starts with an E... so she became Xsnrg.

This has to be a favorite of mine, I don't even know really why. The whole thing is beautiful, I love the foals expressions and the contrast in their coats. They are absolutly adorable, beautiful shot!
