Description Another illustration assignment. This one was fun; we had to take a classic faery tale and change it in whatever way we want, as long as it held some original context or character from the original telling. My choice was "Little Red Riding Hood," and I decided to change it into a Japanese Oni-Demon slayer story, which are pretty popular in Japan.

Red Hood, the most talented demon slayer in the land, is assigned a quest by a village girl; to send medicine to the elderly wisewoman who lives at Rashamon Gate, who is her grandmother. However, to get to Rashamon she must pass through the forbidden bamboo forest that seperates the village and the gate. The bamboo forest is haunted by the horrible Oni wolf, which is infamous for killing woodsmen with its big claws, and abducting the maidens who use the stream to clean their clothes. She learns from the villagers that the Wolf hides by turning into mist, and only appears when it hears wood being cut by axes or the ripples in the stream when the maidens touch the water. Red Hood devises a plan; she borrows the girl's clothes and goes into the forest. Dressed as a maiden and carrying the medicine in a laundry bag, she heads towards the stream. There, she touches the water with her slipper to summon the wolf, which can hear her with its great big ears. The Oni Wolf appears behind her, and says, "What a pretty dress you have." "The better to hide more knives with," Red Hood says... and, that's pretty much brings us up to the scene here.

All drawn and colored digitally, which was annoying but neccessary. The idea was to do it like a Japanese print; The text is the title, and the name of the translator (a kid in my class named Ken!). Flat colors, only gradients and line work. I like this style, and I was considering doing other pieces like it.

This is amazing work! I've tried to draw in a Japanese woodblock print style many times before and it's incredibly hard to "simplify" things and achieve the economy of line that the old masters were adept at, but you've pulled it off perfectly! Well done!

A very detailed piece that takes a bit of eyeing. I like how the wolf's fur and those brown rags terminate like the fog from which he's emerging. The details of his entire head are very focal to me as well. Reminds me of that old Rankin-Bass animation as well as traditional oni.

I'm very impressed by the gradients, how gradual the colours transition from one side of the scale to the other. Also how delicate the slayer looks - her foot gently touching the water, her tiny hand on the blade. Total contrast to how deadly she intends to be. This is a good piece to analyse.

Amazing....

only one comment- the kimono's folded over left-to-right instead of normal right-to-left.

Why is this important?

left-to-right says that the person wearing the kimono is dead. That is burial garb.

Maybe Red Hood is recognizing that the 'girl' he plays will 'die'- leaving the Oni Slayer in her place?

Ooo. Cool. >_>
