Description This is one of my favorite zoo photos in terms of lighting, composition, and pose.
I'm tentatively calling it Vipera aspis.

It's very nice that you were able to get such crisp detail in the scales and such.

I know! That's more the camera than me, though.... and steady hands.

The shape of the head fits into Vipera genus. The pattern and color seem to fit into Vipera aspis species. I'd say it's V. aspis. :-D Viper centered forum could probably give you more accurate and professional answer! I'm kind of curious about it's species as well. The viper in the picture looks pretty.

I was looking at the Vipera species and subspecies and the shape looks right but the colors of the pattern are throwing me. I think I'll call it Vipera aspis for now.

The first thing in my mind was a European Asp. But chances are I'm wrong. Just thought I'd throw it out there.

That seems like a good idea to me. The pattern fits with V. aspis. Whatever it is, it is a very pretty snake.

This is a great photo. I agree with you, the lighting, composition, and pose are great! If you need help IDing the snake, I could post it to our herp ID blog for you

Thank you
Please do! It always makes me a bit unsatisfied when I can't figure out a species.

Thanks! I'm glad to hear that, because it's really hard to do with zoo photos.
