A money order is like a check, but you pay the full amount of it up front so that there's no chance it can bounce due to lack of funds. It's a safer way to send money, since if cash gets stolen it can't be traced but if a money order is stolen it can't be cashed without giving up ID since it'd have my name on it to pay to.
