Description In 2004, I visited Ground Zero for the second time. The year before, I took pictures of the construction walls, where thousands of friends, family and strangers of 9-11 victims had signed their names. I lost these photos when airport security decided it necessary to run a bomb check on my bags. Whatever they used erased 8 rolls of film. Regardless, I was able to go back the following year and visit the opposite side of the site.

This 20-foot-tall artifact was discovered in the smoking ruins two weeks after the attacks and became a symbol for recovery workers, family and later construction crews at the site. The steel beams were once part of World Trade Center 6, one of the smaller buildings in the 16-acre complex.

They left it in it's original spot until this past October. It has been moved to a temporary home at St. Peter's Church, near the site. The World Trade Center Memorial Foundation has said it plans to include the cross as part of its memorial or inside the Sept. 11 museum.

thanks! i thought it needed some background to it. it was absolutely chilling to see in person, plus most people don't know the story.
