A grin on his lips, confidence in his stride, he dances.

A subtle bow, a flourish of his hand. Blood spills over the edge of his goblet, coloring his moonlit skin with a crimson filigree.

The raven flies, calling out to the heavens in a hoarse trill and the sun shutters at the sound, retreating below the horizon.

He dances to awaken the four: the Wolf, the Owl, the Serpent, and the Cat. The beasts who hold the secret of eternity—the life-force of all.

The cross marking the tomb rattles, and his feet softly press the ground as he twirls, spinning and gliding as if no earth is beneath him. He crushes the rose within his fingers, a lone thorn piercing the tender flesh of his palm. The white turns to red and he bleeds.

Poison takes his breath away and he wilts upon the tomb of the beasts, victim of his own sacrifice.

Sunlight fades. The beasts remain asleep, blanketed by fleeting warmth of the dancer’s last embrace.

Eternity. A secret, still.
